Last week, the center posted letters about the plan to every patient, said Patty Caplan, the chief operating officer.Information about the plan, including the current announcement on the center’s website, will also be available online.“We plan to work individually with each family, each patient,” Storey said.In the coming months, said Caplan, the center will counsel each patient in choosing which clinic to transfer to and record all patients’ decisions.“For nearly fifty years, we’ve been in the Mission responding to… the community,” said Ricardo Alvarez, the center’s medical director.  In addressing the shifting demographics of the district, he said, the center continues to fulfill that role.Employees from the Valencia Clinic will be transferred to Excelsior and Shotwell, meaning no workers will be laid off as a result of the consolidation. By honoring the needs of both employees and patients in the community, Alvarez said, the center is “maintaining that excellence.” center_img The Mission Neighborhood Health Center, the largest health clinic in the neighborhood, will close its location at Valencia Street and consolidate the services offered there to its main location on Shotwell and 16th streets and its Excelsior location. The Valencia clinic provides pediatric and teen services, while the Excelsior and Shotwell clinics provide services for people of all ages.Brenda Storey, the health center’s CEO, said the Valencia clinic’s patients have declined by 20 percent and  “the number of households with children is declining” in the Mission District.By transferring to Shotwell or the Excelsior, she added, families can go to one clinic for both adult and children’s services.last_img read more

Brunswick Nuclear Plant to test sirens Wednesday

first_img The sirens within 10 miles of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant will be tested at full-volume. This test may be performed more than once to make sure each siren works properly. This test is performed quarterly, in coordination with emergency officials in Brunswick and New Hanover counties, who are responsible for sounding the sirens.According to a news release from Duke Energy, hearing a siren does not mean to evacuate. In an emergency, sirens are sounded as a signal for residents to tune to a local radio or TV station that would carry emergency alert messages. Two other men who are also migrant workers were injured on the same night. As the voting came to an end on Saturday, Cassola said that both Muscat and Delia are responsible for the ‘racist’ climate in Malta and claimed that they even presented racists as candidates. Cassola referenced a PL MEP candidate who had augured that European Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom would be kidnapped by a Somali migrant for her support for migrants.Cassola also made reference to another PN MEP candidate fielded during this year’s EP election, who had filmed himself outside shops in Marsa and Hamrun and ranted that they were taking over businesses.WhatsApplast_img read more

Boy Saved From Committing Suicide at the 50th Stage of the Blue
Boy Saved From Committing Suicide at the 50th Stage of the Blue

first_img(Photo Credit: FileHippo News) Advertisement In what could be one of the strangest things you would ever come across, is an Internet trend growing in popularity that encourages its participants to hurt themselves in real life – dubbed the Blue Whale Game Challenge; a 50-day challenge that requires participants to receive instructions from an anonymous administrator every day that involves them to doing things that hurt themselves such as cutting themselves, and their final task (the 50th task) is to commit suicide. As horrible as it may sound, at least two recent deaths in India have been linked to this sick challenge as well. And according to reports by TOI, a Class VII student on Thursday tried jumping off the third floor of his school building in Indore, India as the last step of a Blue Whale-type suicide dare but was saved in the nick of time by his PT coach.Reports claim the child was playing the game on his father’s mobile phone for a long time but the parents had no clue. Although the child and his classmates say he was playing the challenge, police were skeptical because there is no mobile app for the game they know of, and the boy didn’t have any cuts on his body since the game at some levels involves the participant cutting him or herself. – Advertisement – They told police that the boy kept a diary where he recorded every challenge that he completed in the deadly game. However, reports said that he lost the diary after the 49th challenge but was so hooked that he went online to find the 50th and last challenge that instructed him to jump off a building. This mysterious Blue Whale challenge created in 2013 by Philipp Budeikin, a former psychology student is said to be played in over 11 countries; Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Kenya, Paraguay, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Uruguay, US, and Venezuela and has recorded over 100 deaths mostly in China, Russia, and United States.Kenya becomes the first and only African country to have participated in this challenge. In May, a 16-year old boy; Jamie Njenga, who was a Form Two student at J. G. Kiereini Secondary School in Kiambu County, hanged himself on the balcony of a hotel owned by his grandfather after playing all levels of the game – becoming the first case of this kind to be reported in the country. The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) immediately wrote to Google and Facebook to block the Blue Whale online game.Generally, the game is based in the relationship between the challengers (in this case: the players or participants) and the administrators. It involves a series of duties given by the administrators that players must complete, usually one per day, some of which involve self-mutilation. Some tasks can be given in advance, while others can be passed on by the administrators on the day, and the last task being suicide.last_img read more

STAR PREVIEW Republic of Ireland v Scotland

It certainly could get tactical given that Scotland just need to avoid defeat in order to stay in front of the ROI.Asked if he would accept a point Scotland manager Gordon Strachan said: “I can’t remember any manager telling me that this is the way you play for a draw. I don’t think I have tried it. Rice University to Consider Invitation to Join the WAC

first_imgAddThis Share Contact: Michael Cinelli Phone: (713) 527-4807 Rice University to Consider Invitation to Join the WAC The Rice University Board of Governors has affirmed Rice’s intention to proceed with discussions about joining the Western Athletic Conference based on today’s invitation. The completion of this negotiation would make Rice a member of thelargest Division I-A conference in the nation.”For the past several months, following the collapse of the Southwest Conference, the Board of Governors and I have been engaged in a careful review of the university’s options regarding intercollegiate athletics in consultation with many members of the Rice community,” Rice president Malcolm Gillis said. “All options, and the corresponding costs of each, were discussed at length and on multiple occasions with members of the Board. This process involved faculty, student leaders, the Athletics Committee, members of the administration and many alumni. The feedback from all constituencies has been extraordinarily productive.” Rice would join two other Southwest Conference members-Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University-as part of an expanded WAC. The WAC’s expansion from 10 teams to 16 teams-split into two eight-team divisions-will be completed in time for the 1996 football season, possibly sooner for other sports. Current members of the WAC include the Air Force Academy, Colorado State, UT-El Paso, Wyoming, Brigham Young, Fresno State, Hawaii, New Mexico, SanDiego State and Utah. The process of finding a new athletic conference for Rice was anexhaustive one, Gillis said.”We talked at length to presidents and commissioners in several existing athletic conferences,” he said. “We explored membership in conferences at all levels, I-A through III, and considered at great length the implications of independent status, again at all three levels.” When WAC officials indicated that the expanded conference would consist of two divisions, the decision by Rice actively to consider becoming a member was enhanced. Eastern Division conference members will likely include SMU, TCU, Tulsa, Colorado State, UTEP, New Mexico, and either Air Force or Wyoming. Tulsa is one of the new schools also expected to join the WAC. The other new members, which would affiliate with the WAC’s Western Division, are San Jose Stateand Nevada-Las Vegas.”We believe that an affiliation with the new 16-team Western Athletic Conference and maintenance of a Division I-Aintercollegiate program is in Rice’s best interest,” Gillis said.”We have a group of outstanding coaches dedicated to high academic and athletic standards in both men’s and women’s sports,” he added. “We have students who can compete at the highest level of athletics as in so many other areas of extracurricular activity. We are committed to managing the revenues and costs of intercollegiate athletics so that academic programs do not suffer.” Rice became a charter member of the Southwest Conference in 1914, two years after it opened its doors to students. It has a total student enrollment of 4,257 and a full-time faculty of 437. ###last_img read more

Nanotubes Bring Precision to Exploring the Nanoscale
first_imgShare CONTACT: Lia Unrau PHONE: (713)831-4793 E-MAIL: unrau@rice.eduNANOTUBES BRING PRECISION TO EXPLORING THE NANOSCALE Using a carbon nanotube, a tiny, hollow cylinder ofcarbon resembling rolled-up chicken wire, as a microscope tip now providesscientists with a precise way to examine and manipulate matter in the nanoscaleworld. In the Nov. 14 issue of Nature, Rice University researchers led by professorRichard Smalley report using nanotubes as nanoprobes with unique advantages overconventional tips.Scanning tunneling microscopes and scanning force microscopes are the toolsof choice for probing and manipulating atoms and molecules. However, it isdifficult to make long, pointed tips that are structurally welldefined and thatwill not break or damage the surface being examined.Smalley and his colleagues have shown how carbon nanotubes can be glued ontoa silicon scanning probe tip, and like a tiny record player needle, explore thefine contours of a surface as well as push atoms around. These long, narrow nanotips, with a diameter between 5 and 20 nanometers, andlengths of up to several micrometers, can reach into deep trenches whererelatively crude metal or silicon scanning probe tips are too wide to delve.Because the carbon nanotubes are extremely strong yet flexible, the nanotipsare stiff enough to hold up against the surface when used to tap it, but gentleenough to bend like an elbow without breaking when it reaches its limit. It thensprings back to its normal position.“These multiwalled nanotubes eliminate a major problem with other probe tips:a fragile tip that breaks or that damages the sample,” Smalley said. “Thebuckling serves as a kind of insurance policy against breakage. When the forcebecomes too much, or if the tip is accidentally `crashed’ into a hard surface, the tip snaps back, much like the side view mirror of your car.”This “stiff yet flexible” property is especially helpful when exploringbiological samples, as inflexible metal tips ruin the sample.“By adjusting the length and diameter of the nanotube, this bucklinginsurance policy can be adjusted to the needs of the user,” Smalley pointed out.And because each carbon nanotube is a stable molecule, for the first time theprobe tip is well-defined. When the molecular structure of the tip is known, thetip-sample interaction can be controlled, providing more reliability inexperiments. The report also notes that nanotubes are conductive, making them “molecularwires.” They can therefore be used in scanning tunneling microscopes, able tomeasure electrochemical currents or to alter samples by applying a voltagepulse.### FacebookTwitterPrintEmailAddThislast_img

The Premiere International MBA is Waiting For You in London

first_img “London doesn’t love the latent or the lurking, has neither time, nor taste, nor sense for anything less discernible than the red flag in front of the steam-roller. It wants cash over the counter and letters ten feet high.” – Henry JamesIt could be argued that London is the quintessential—or at least the original—international destination. Both defiantly English and seamlessly accommodating for an international community, London is a city in a state of constant reinvention.Oscar Wilde once said London was composed of “beautiful idiots and brilliant lunatics,” which makes perfect sense that the city is presently and almost always the world’s global financial center (close but no cigar, Singapore). It’s no secret that the city leads the charge when it comes to gold, silver, derivatives, foreign exchange, money markets, debt securities, and international insurance. And London’s strategic location means it can stay connected to both the East and West at all times. These reasons and so much more make London perhaps the definitive choice for b-schoolers who aspire to cut deals that bridge cultures and cross borders. For prospective MBAs with international ambitions, opportunities to interface with every conceivable industry abound in London, as do opportunities to collaborate with non-UK companies with London hubs.We took the liberty of giving you the skinny on four London-area business degrees that will set you on a global path. Let’s take a deeper dive, shall we?London Business SchoolThe London Business School EMBA-Global Americas & Europe degree is a multinational collaboration that imparts the “insight, network and international perspectives” that today’s globally focused executive needs. The program—a partnership between LBS, Columbia, and the University of Hong Kong—is available in two distinct paths for entrepreneurs, managers, or executives. EMBA-Global Americas & Europe students earn two MBAs as they study in New York and London, while EMBA-Global Asia students bridge the gap between East and West as they study in Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York, and London. Forbes ranked LBS’ international degree first overall in terms of its return on investment, as its 2012 class earned average salaries of $119,100 and paid back their investment in 3.4 years.Imperial College LondonThe ICL’s Global Online MBA is a two-year, part-time degree that combines “innovative thinking and insight with new technology to develop practical solutions to real world issues, benefiting business and improving society.” The Global MBA is structured to maximize intimacy and in-class time, culminating in a week-long Capstone Business Game project.CHECK THIS OUT: Oxford Saïd Dean, Together with Apple’s Tim Cook, Launches New Entrepreneurial HubOxford University Saïd Business SchoolThe Saïd Business School 13-month masters-level Global Business Diploma is focused on giving graduates the tools to “undertake the senior international responsibilities which drive organizational success.” Director Kathy Harvey explains that the degree is guaranteed to “provide insights to anyone operating, or aspiring to operate, in a global environment.” Graduates will have an advanced “understanding of the issues involved in conducting business in a global landscape,” particularly “global business strategy, risk and reputation, corporate diplomacy and doing business in emerging economies.”Cambridge University’s Judge Business SchoolThe Judge Business School at Cambridge University Global Business concentration emphasizes cross-cultural differences; doing business in/with emerging economies; managing the multinational enterprise; and multinational organizations in social and environmental issues. The concentration was developed specifically for MBA students “seeking careers in careers at multinational organizations; small and medium-sized enterprises in sectors that are affected by international pressures; and students with a general interest in the role of organizations in global issues.” Last Updated Nov 9, 2017 by Jonathan PfefferFacebookTwitterLinkedinemail About the AuthorJonathan PfefferJonathan Pfeffer joined the Clear Admit and MetroMBA teams in 2015 after spending several years as an arts/culture writer, editor, and radio producer.
