Wildfire Smoke Expected To Move Back To Kenai Peninsula
Wildfire Smoke Expected To Move Back To Kenai Peninsula

first_imgAshford: “We do anticipate smoke increasing in the Kenai Peninsula as we head through the week. High pressure building  into the area will push smoke back into the Kenai that had been pushed into the inland area of Alaska. This will result in increased smoke especially in the areas of Seward and Cooper Landing.”  The Swan Lake Fire is estimated at 77,732 acres with roughly 454 crew members and is currently at 14% containment primarily on that southern and southwestern edge of the fire. Temperatures are forecast to be in the high 70s and low 80s in the coming days. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Kenai Peninsula will be impacted once again as the wind swings back to the northwest and the downwind valleys fill with smoke – especially near Cooper Landing, Seward, and along the Sterling Highway south of the fire. Smoke from the Swan Lake Fire, and other wildfires burning throughout Alaska, is impacting air quality throughout the Kenai Peninsula. A dense smoke advisory remains in effect for the Kenai Peninsula until further notice.center_img According to Jonathan Ashford, a spokesman for the Alaska Incident Management Team this shift in wind direction on Tuesday is expected to bring smoke from the Swan Lake fire south and back into the Sterling Highway region, which could impact travel. STATE REP RACE Candidates Debate Reforms Needed To Hold Judges More Accountable
STATE REP RACE Candidates Debate Reforms Needed To Hold Judges More Accountable

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — At last month’s 19th Middlesex State Representative debate, candidates were asked what can and should be done to hold judges more accountable for their decisions.“I think anyone an appointed position should be held accountable by someone, somewhere,” said Patricia Meuse (I-Tewksbury). “Is it the governor’s judicial council? I’m not sure. They’re the ones who appoint them. I think maybe they’re should be a citizen’s council who, every five years, look over every judge’s decisions.”“What happened during the summer with [Judge Feeley] was outrageous,” added Meuse. “As an attorney, if I had ever had a drug dealer go to that judge and have been sentenced, I would have had them file an appeal. If you’re going to do it for him, do it for all of us. He’s a drug dealer who is helping his family? [By the judge’s logic], then all drug dealers are trying to help their families.”“All judges should definitely be accountable and, every five years, their records should be looked at,” said Pina Prinzivalli (R-Tewksbury). “Judge Feeley was the one that released a drug dealer because he said he was supporting his family, which is just ridiculous.  I’m the only candidate that joined the fight with State Rep. Jim Lyons to impeach Judge Feely. The reason there was no vote to impeach him was because the Democratic Party on Beacon Hill would rather not vote on it and protect themselves, than stand up for what is right and what is wrong. As your next State Representative, I will always be a bold voice and fight for what is right on Beacon Hill.”“Pina, you weren’t the only candidate,” said Dave Robertson (D-Tewksbury). “In fact, I signed Rep. Lyons’ petition the very first day and then wrote an extensive op/ed that was looking to creative another council and more bureaucracy, but rather put judges on a rotating schedule and put their accountability in the hands of the voters.”“When you look at appointed judges vs. elected judges, it’s pretty transparent – and this comes from both liberal and conservative law schools – that when judges start getting elected, and you’re friends with that elected judge, and your son or daughter gets pulled over, that ticket kind of goes away,” added Robertson. “What was proposed was a hybrid system. A governor would appoint such judges and, after five years, the public could vote them out. Voters couldn’t replace them, the governor would still have the ability to appoint with the advice of his or her council. It appoints accountability in the hands of us, the voters. Judge Feeley wasn’t the first judge to screw up in the Commonwealth, let’s face it. It’s been happening since 1776.”Watch the debate, courtesy of Wilmington Community Television, below. 20 Million Gift Creates Mental Health Policy Center In Houston

first_img Davis LandDr. Andy Keller, Dr. Michelle Harper, and Dr. Seema Shah answer questions regarding a Meadows Mental Health Institute report detailing the mental health needs of Harris County children on October 30, 2017.A $20 million gift from two Houston philanthropists — Maureen and Jim Hackett — will create The Hackett Center for Mental Health, a project meant to strengthen access to mental health care for patients in the Houston region. The center will be a part of Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, which operates statewide. The new center, to be located in the Texas Medical Center, will focus specifically on the region surrounding Houston, according to a press release. “It’s transformative in the sense that’s it’s our first program that’s dedicated to a specific region and that is entirely about making that region work well,” Andy Keller, chief executive at Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, told Houston Public Media. A recent report from the institute, funded by Houston Endowment, recommends primary care providers move from referring patients to mental health specialists to an “integrated care” model, where mental health care is provided alongside traditional medicine. The Hackett Center for Mental Health, administrators say, will work towards that model.“I really think and have felt and believed for some time that integrated care is the only way to treat health,” said Susan Fordice, director of the new center. “For so long we have really detached the head from the body, and the only thing that makes sense is to reattach the head to the body when it comes to our health,” she said.Fordice said the center will partner with other organizations in Houston and bring together insights from its work in the mental health community to inform state policy.  00:00 /00:53 X To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Listen Sharelast_img read more

Legalizing Marijuana Did Not Make Sky Fall Say Lawmakers with Experience
Legalizing Marijuana Did Not Make Sky Fall Say Lawmakers with Experience

first_imgDel. Curt Anderson speaks at a press conference on marijuana taxation and regulation. Rep. Jonathan Singer of Colorado (far right) testified before the General Assembly about his state’s experience with marijuana legalization, along with Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes (not pictured). (Photo by Roberto Alejandro)Maryland lawmakers heard testimony on the taxation and regulation of marijuana from state and city officials representing Colorado and Washington, two states that have legalized marijuana. Legalization, the officials said, has not resulted in increased risks to public safety, but there remain challenges, particularly where financing is concerned, in establishing an effective legal market for the drug. The testimony was presented last Friday by Colorado State House Representative Jonathan Singer, who sponsored and worked to place Colorado’s legalization measure before voters for a 2013 referendum, and Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes, who put an end to prosecutions for marijuana possession after taking office in 2010 and sponsored Washington state’s ballot initiative to legalize the substance.“We need to treat marijuana like the drug that it is, not the drug some fear it to be,” said Singer at a Maryland American Civil Liberties Union organized press conference held before his testimony. “That means you regulate it, that means you tax it, that means you watch where it’s going, and in Colorado, it’s working.”Singer said Colorado has succeeded in developing a system for keeping the marijuana trade out of the hands of criminals, and that teen use of marijuana, traffic fatalities due to marijuana, and crime as a whole have all either stayed stagnant or dropped since the legalization measure passed. “The concerns about the sky falling haven’t born themselves out,” said Singer. Also speaking at the press conference, Holmes said that when he first took office, he dismissed all pending marijuana possession cases in Seattle. “In a city with a seven percent African-American population, 59 percent of the pending marijuana possession cases were against African Americans, and it’s an example that I think has replicated across the country,” Holmes said. He added that crime has continued to decrease in Seattle despite legalization. The disparate impact of marijuana arrests on communities of color has certainly been replicated in Baltimore, said state delegate Curt Anderson (D-Baltimore City). “In 2013, in Baltimore City, there were 6500 total arrests for marijuana. Of the 6,500, 5,400 were African Americans,” Anderson said. He continued, saying Maryland’s recent decriminalization has failed to have its intended effects as police agencies have been slow to act.“So we’re working harder to try to get a taxation and regulation of marijuana, in place,” said Anderson, sponsor of the House version of the marijuana taxation and regulation bill currently under consideration in the General Assembly. The measures which legalized marijuana in Colorado and Washington have come under some criticism for excluding many people of color who are ineligible to become distributors due to past marijuana convictions. Sen. Jamie Raskin (D-Montgomery County), sponsor of the senate version of the marijuana taxation and regulation effort in Maryland, said Maryland’s bill addresses this problem. “In the current legislation that we’re working on, we . . . have minority business protection, and we also have a statement that conviction for only a non-violent marijuana possession offense in the past is not a bar to participating in the new industry,” said Raskin.According to Sara Love, public policy director Maryland ACLU, the legislators who heard Singer and Holmes’s testimonies posed questions on how legalization works in practice, with a particular emphasis on concerns about teen use and impaired driving, rather than on whether marijuana should be legalized. “This is happening already. People are already on our roads impaired. Teens say it is easier to buy marijuana than it is to buy beer. When you look at the regulated system, they’re able to address these things,” said Love, who added licensed distributors are more likely to work to keep the drug out of the hands of teenagers for fear of losing their license.Singer said that while Colorado has had a good experience so far, finding banks willing to make business loans to entrepreneurs has proved challenging since selling marijuana is still a crime under federal law. “Those are still outlaying issues that we need to resolve, but the net-product has been positive so far,” said Singer.ralejandro@afro.comlast_img read more

Twists are in the depth of the characters
Twists are in the depth of the characters

first_imgWhat inspired you to write Simian? When I was young, my grandmother used to tell me tales from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as bedtime stories. My favourites involved Hanuman and Bali. Then as I grew older and I thought about them in detail, I found myself questioning certain aspects of the stories I couldn’t come to terms with. My grandmother couldn’t answer them, it was upto me. And I soon found, among others of my generation, that I wasn’t alone in this questioning. That was the seed of the idea for Simian. To deal with these questions in me.  Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Why do you think a legend like that of Hanuman’s needed a re-telling?These legends have been told and retold countless times in hundreds of languages over the past three thousand years. I don’t know why they have survived and others haven’t. All I know is that there must be a reason why they are so much a part of our culture and us. I think retelling these stories is part of their nature. They are open to it since they are not written in stone and that is what is so unique and beautiful about them.  Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixHow did the story of Simian formulate in your mind? How difficult (or easy) was it to get it down on paper? The story formulated as a result of the delving questions I have had ever since my grandmother used to tell me the Ramayana as a young boy. It had a long gestation period. I had to mature into the person I am now for it to be ready. That part was beyond my control. Regarding difficulty; on the one hand the work was incredibly hard but on the other hand it made sense to me, so that made it easier.  Does your graphic novel add any twists to the story that everyone knows?Yes, it does. The twists are in the depth of the characters and the unique and interesting exploration of what is so familiar to us in the story of the Ramayana. I dig deep and explore the characters relationships and motivations. Why did Sugriva kill his brother Bali? Why does Ram decide to stay in the forest even when Bharat comes to take him back? Why did Ravan really kidnap Sita? It is meant for both those readers familiar with the Ramayana, and those who don’t know anything about the story. Why did you pick Ramayana and Hanuman’s story?I picked the Ramayana because it means so much to me. I’ve known the story since before I can remember and that fascination with it has never left me. When my grandmother used to tell me the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, from that very young age I always identified more with the Vanars. And I chose Hanuman’s story because I found his story the most compelling. I also felt it hadn’t been explored yet, the way it should be.Do you have plans to take on any other character from any other epic in the future? Not yet. I’m working on part three of Simian right now. There’s time after that.If you weren’t an author what would you have been?Actually I’m a film-maker by training and profession, and being an author feels no different. I’m doing what I’ve always been doing, and that is telling stories.last_img read more

In This Issue… Currencies metals rally… Wi

first_imgIn This Issue… * Currencies & metals rally… * Will ISDA trigger CDS’s? * Bollard gets under Chuck’s skin… * ECB, BOC, BOE all meet today… And, Now, Today’s Pfennig For Your Thoughts! Greek Bond Swap Deadline Approaches… Good day… And a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday to you! Well… another day, and another trying day for yours truly, with getting the Pfennig out, and having it “legal”… We’ll have to see how this all plays out… But, hey! If cancer didn’t stop me from writing, neither will this roadblock! OK… well, as we draw closer to deadline for the Greek Bond Swap, it appears as though Greece will end up will have attracted enough investors to swap their current Greek Bonds for new bonds. This news is positive for the euro, and we all know that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and all we have to do is switch goose for euro, and gander for currencies and metals. For instance, the Aussie dollar (A$) is back above $1.06, and Gold is back to $1,700 this morning. There are a few currencies this morning, that are not participating in the euro-led rally… The Japanese yen for instance is getting hammered after Japan printed the largest Current Account Deficit since comparable data began in 1985… 437.3 Billion yen… The trend here is not good for Japan, folks… they Gov’t debt has been soaring for a decade now, but Japan always had that Trade Surplus, that feeds the Current Account… The Japanese don’t have that Trade Surplus to fall back on any longer… This is where I would normally tell you my opinion, which could be wrong, about how I view yen… But, like Hall & Oates, no can do! The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) met last night (Thursday morning for them!) and left rates unchanged… RBNZ Gov. Bollard, has gotten under my skin for so long now, and this is just another example of his ability to do so… Bollard said, “The domestic economy is showing signs of recovery. Household spending appears to have picked up over the past few months and a recovery in building activity appears to be underway. That recovery will strengthen as repairs and reconstruction in Canterbury pick up later in the year. High export commodity prices are also helping to support a continuing recovery in domestic activity.”… OK… so that sounds like he’s ready to remove the emergency rate cuts that were made last year, right? Wrong! Bollard then went on to say, “the RBNZ’s forecasts are not inconsistent with a story that would see rates remaining in one place for much of this year.” So… in other words, he doesn’t want to be different than the other Central Banks around the world… I would tell Bollard if I had the chance, the same thing I used to tell my kids, when they would tell that “all the other kids are doing something”… I would say, “but don’t you want to be better than the other kids?” So… Allan Bollard, don’t you want to be better than the other Central Banks, that allow inflation to build a strong foundation, without batting an eye? This euro-led rally in the currencies and metals this morning, leads me a thought that I heard years ago, back in the 70’s, when I first began my career in the markets, that’s right, I said the 70’s… 1973 to be exact… I know, you’re sitting there thinking, but I’ve seen him, there’s no way he’s that old! HA! OK, back to the saying… When the markets want to rally, they’ll use any excuse to do so… This is what today’s rally looks like, as the markets are using the fact that Greek is swapping their old bonds for new bonds at HUGE losses to the holders, as a reason to rally… Think about that for a minute, dear readers… the markets are making lemonade out of lemons… but “they’re never wrong”, right? Speaking of the euro… The European Central Bank (ECB) is meeting this morning to discuss rates, and other things on their collective minds. I expect that ECB President, Draghi, will announce in a bit that the ECB will keep rates unchanged… They are currently at historic lows, so unless the ECB wants to be JUST LIKE the U.S. and Japan with their near zero and zero interest rates respectively, the ECB should just sit on their hands… Yesterday, I saw a story title flash across the screen that the ECB’s balance sheet has soared to 3 Trillion euros… Well, as best as I can find on the internet, and believe me this is difficult stuff to find, the Fed’s balance sheet is about the same size… So, when you consider that the Eurozone as a whole has a larger GDP than the U.S. , having a balance sheet about the same size doesn’t seem to be so bad… For those of you keeping score at home… Global GDP in 2011 was $74.5 Trillion… Eurozone $14.8 Trillion or 20% USA $14.7 Trillion or 20% China $10.1 Trillion or 14% Japan $ 4.3 Trillion or 6% And rounding out the top 5… India at $4.1 Trillion or 5% The Bank of Canada (BOC) will also meet today to discuss interest rates… I don’t believe that BOC Gov. Carney has come out of his “bunker” yet, so he’ll keep rates unchanged, as he continues to have a bunker mentality about global problems… In Australia overnight, Aussie job creation received a hit last month, and lost 15,000 jobs… But don’t go out and start with your impression of Chicken Little here… In December Australia posted a 36,000 job loss, but that was reversed with a positive 46,000 in January… So, we’ll have to wait a month or two to tell is this is a trend… Somehow I doubt it, as the mines that were flooded last year are coming back on board… Hopefully Aussie employers don’t do their version of a bunker mentality, because China lowered their GDP target… Speaking of China… the Chinese applied the brakes once again on renminbi appreciation, making that every day this week, so far. Speculators are backing away from the renminbi in droves, as the forward markets have some semblance to them. Good riddance to them! The speculators have made dealing in renminbi very difficult for years… So, if they never come back, that will be too soon for me! But, what’s with China applying the brakes here? Well… we’ve seen this many times in the past 9 years that we’ve dealt in renminbi and followed the Chinese moves. It’s really the opposite of what happens here in the U.S. The Chinese don’t want the markets to believe that the renminbi is a ONE-WAY street of appreciation, so they apply the brakes every now and then to remind the markets that it’s not a ONE-WAY street… Whereas, the U.S. applies the brakes on the way down, instead of the way up… The U.S. cannot allow all its creditors to believe that they are going to get paid back with inflation, tremendously weakened dollars, which they will, but for now, instead of just allowing the dollar to go to what Doug Casey calls, “its intrinsic value”… There are circuit breakers and we have these periods of dollar strength… OK… so, we talked briefly about the Greek bond swap proposal, and I gave you the breakdown of what each bondholder receives… But the problem is that unless Greece attracts enough bondholders that want to swap bonds, the deal falls through… so… 90% of total holders is the goal… if that’s not met, then the next deal breaker is 60%, but if between 60 and 90% accept, then the Greeks have to decide to implement CAC’s (collective action clauses), which would force the hold-outs to take losses on their bonds… And if CAC’s are implemented, then the ISDA people might view this as a default, which would begin to trigger CDS (credit default swaps)… So… 90% is the goal for the Greeks… the deadline is around 2pm CT today, but we won’t know the details until tomorrow morning… But for now, the markets are saying they believe that even if the goal isn’t met, and CAC’s are implemented, that’s it’s not going to bring about systemic risk… that’s why they are buying euros this morning and selling dollars. OK, before I go to the Big Finish… I saw this come across yesterday, and immediately began to choke… January Consumer Credit soared to $17.77Billion VS $10.45 Billion forecast… Add to that December’s total of $16.27 Billion and what you’ve got here is another trip down the “we spend more than we make” road… And this, also made me choke… From the WSJ… “Federal Reserve officials are considering a new type of bond-buying program designed to subdue worries about future inflation if they decide to take new steps to boost the economy in the months ahead. Under the approach, the Fed would print new money to buy long-term mortgage or Treasury bonds but effectively tie up that money by borrowing it back for short periods at low rates. The aim of such an approach would be to relieve anxieties that money printing could fuel inflation later, a fear widely expressed by critics of the Fed’s previous efforts to aid the recovery.” I’m thinking of all kinds of dastardly things that I could say here, but wait! I can’t anymore! So, just move along, Chuck, these are not the droids you’re looking for… Then There Was This… The Dutch Freedom Party has called for a return to the Guilder, becoming the first political movement in the Eurozone with a large popular base to opt for withdrawal from the single currency.“The euro is not in the interests of the Dutch people,” said Geert Wilders, the leader of the right-wing populist party with a sixth of the seats in the Dutch parliament. “We want to be the master of our own house and our own country, so we say yes to the guilder. Bring it on.”Mr Wilders made his decision after receiving a report by London-based Lombard Street Research concluding that the Netherlands is badly handicapped by euro membership, and that it could cost EMU’s creditor core more than 2.4 trillion euros to hold monetary union together over the next four years. “If the politicians in The Hague disagree with our report, let them show the guts to hold a referendum. Let the Dutch people decide,” he said. Chuck again… The Dutch leaders must want something from the Eurozone because they normally fall in line right behind the Germans… To recap… The Greek bond swap deadline approaches, and more holders of Greek bonds have announced that they will participate in the bond swap, thus reducing further the fear factor on the euro… The euro is leading most currencies and metals higher this morning. Yen is not participating as they posted the largest Current Account Deficit on record for them, and China is applying the brakes, just to prove the renminbi is not a ONE-WAY Street… Currencies today 3/8/12… American Style: A$ $1.0660, kiwi .8265, C$ $1.0050, euro 1.3260, sterling 1.5810, Swiss $1.10, … European Style: rand 7.5075, krone 5.5950, SEK 6.7085, forint 220.70, zloty 3.0990, koruna 18.6660, RUB 29.37, yen 81.70, sing 1.2515, HKD 7.7575, INR 50.28, China 6.3160, pesos 12.78, BRL 1.7550, Dollar Index 79.32, Oil $106.96, 10-year 1.99%, Silver $34.09, and Gold… $1,701.00 That’s it for today… Well, the major conferences started their Conference Championships yesterday… My beloved Missouri Tigers play tonight, and they need to win to advance. I sure hope to them cutting down the nets this weekend! Alex informed me last night that I had jumped the gun on the first Water Polo game of the year, it’s Monday not Friday… I see where the new I-Pad was announced yesterday… of course, I had just received an I-Pad2, 3 months ago! Already obsolete! Well, not obsolete, I’ll still use it! It’s what I’ll take to spring training with me, not so I can keep up with the markets, but so I can use it like everyone else does! And with that… I had better get this process going… I hope you have a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday! Sponsor Advertisement JPMorgan is now short over 31 percent of the Comex futures market in silver all by themselves. The gold price was under pressure right from the 6:00 p.m. New York open on Sunday night…and by shortly before 10:00 a.m. Hong Kong time, gold had hit its Far East low price tick of the day, which was around the $1,658 spot mark. From there, the price recovered a bit, before rolling over again about 9:00 am. in London, with the absolute low of the day [around $1,755 spot] coming just minutes after 11:00 a.m. BST.The subsequent rally took gold to its New York high which came just minutes before the 4:00 p.m. BST close in London…11:00 a.m. in New York.  The gold price didn’t do a whole heck of a lot after that.Gold closed at $1,764.50 spot…down $8.50 on the day.  Net volume was very heavy at 178,000 contracts, a big chunk of which were traded before the Hong Kong lunch hour, as volume was pretty heavy in early Far East trading.Silver’s price path was very similar, except for the 75 cent air pocket it hit at 10:00 a.m. Hong Kong time.  Nick Laird sent me the 1-minute tick chart on silver for the time period in question…and it took five minutes from start to finish.  The high-frequency traders did their thing as the market went ‘no bid’.  Here’s the chart for gold, as well as silver. The 11:00 a.m. time on the graph is the local time at Nick’s location on the East coast of Australia…and I thank him for this chart on your behalf.  The ‘click to enlarge’ feature really helps here. After that crucifixion, silver rallied back to the $34.00 spot price…and traded within two bits of that price for the rest of the day.Silver closed at $33.97 spot…down 55 cents.  Net volume was around 50,000 contracts, with 20 percent of that occurring before lunch was over in Hong Kong. The dollar index spiked down 25 basis points at the open, but recovered almost immediately…and I suspect that it was a data feed error rather than a true price move.  The index rallied in fits and starts up until about 9:45 a.m. in London…and from there it traded mostly sideways until shortly after 10:00 a.m. in New York.  From that point it went into a slow decline for the rest of the day…and by the 5:30 p.m. Eastern close, the dollar index was down to 79.54, but up 15 basis points from Friday’s close.I think it’s fair to say that there was no co-relation between the dollar index and the precious metal price action on Monday. The HUI gapped down…and stayed down for the rest of the day…closing right on its low, down 3.14%.The silver stocks got hit even harder…and Nick Laird’s Silver Sentiment Index closed down 3.95%.(Click on image to enlarge)Well, the CME’s Daily Delivery Report for Monday coughed up the last of the big holdouts in the September delivery month for silver.  Last week it was Deutsche Bank coming clean…and yesterday it was Jefferies as the big short/issuer with 231 out of 240 silver contracts posted for delivery within the Comex-approved depositories on Wednesday.  There was a fairly long list of stoppers, but taking the lion’s share, as usual, was JPMorgan and the Bank of Nova Scotia…with Jefferies a distant third.  The Issuers and Stoppers Report is worth a look…and the link is here.  By the way, there were only 2 gold contracts posted for delivery in yesterday’s report. It was a busy day in both the GLD and SLV ETFs on Monday.  Gold continued to pour into GLD…and yesterday they took in another big chunk…290,833 troy ounces to be precise.  Since September 1st, authorized participants have deposited 1.2 million ounces of gold in GLD.  That’s a lot!The fork lifts were busy over at the SLV vaults as well, as they reported receiving 2,422,030 ounces of silver.  Since September 1st, there have been about 9.5 million ounces of silver deposited in SLV, so they are getting caught up.The only question remaining is just how much of a short position still remains in SLV…and GLD for that matter.  I’m sure lots of those positions are being covered as all this silver and gold has been deposited over the month.  But most of that data won’t be in the next report from shortsqueeze.com which should be out any evening now…and as soon as it’s is posted, it will be in this space in my column the following morning.Over at the Comex-approved depositories on Friday, they reported receiving 616,913 troy ounces of silver…and shipped 618,222 ounces of the stuff out the door.  The link to that action is here. Here’s another chart from Nick Laird…showing the U.S. M3 money supply.(Click on image to enlarge)I apologize in advance for the large number of stories in today’s column.  My attempts at ruthless editing three days worth of stories just didn’t pass muster last night, as there are a lot of events worthy of your attention…starting off with the first story, which is a must readEspecially over the past year or so, I have been taken aback by the all the different Internet commentary about JPMorgan manipulating the price of silver. Even though this commentary is now near-universal, it remains unprecedented and underappreciated that a collective accusatory finger is being pointed at such a high profile mega-bank. I can’t think of a similar previous example of such a circumstance. – Silver Analyst Ted Butler, September 22, 2012Well, the question that both Ted Butler and I were asking ourselves yesterday was whether Monday’s price action…starting with the sucker punch to both silver and gold [but especially silver] during the thinly-traded Far East market…was the beginning of the long-expected price correction in the precious metals. The short answer is…I don’t know.  So is the long answer.Nobody knows for sure if JPMorgan et al can, or will, harvest all these newly-minted long contract holders…and ring the cash register at this point.  If they do, how long will the process take…and how low will the price go?  But maybe buyers with deep pockets will aggressively buy any and all dips.  If that’s the case, then “da boyz” are screwed. But, in reality, there’s no way of knowing how this will turn out.  Speaking for myself…and lot of others as well…I’d love to see all these short holders get blown up.Ted pointed out in his weekly commentary on Saturday that JPMorgan is now short over 31 percent of the Comex futures market in silver all by themselves…and he wondered out loud whether “they…and the regulators…have lost their collective minds?”This is beyond criminal, as everyone at the CFTC, the CME Group…and Jamie Dimon himself…should be doing the perp walk this morning in international orange jump suits.Anyway, here are the 6-month charts for silver and gold…and if JPMorgan et al want to liquidate as many longs as possible, they’ll have to take the prices of both metals down below both the 50 and 200-day moving averages.  The averages in both metals are quite a ways down from current levels.(Click on image to enlarge)(Click on image to enlarge)But as I said a few paragraphs ago…can they…and/or will they?  We will find out, as they say, in the fullness of time.It was pretty quiet in Far East trading in both metals on their Tuesday…and volumes were incredibly light, especially considering how monstrous they were this time on Monday. The Far East low came at 2:00 p.m. Hong Kong time, about an hour before the 8:00 a.m. BST London open.  Both silver and gold began to rally a bit off that low…and that has continued into the London trading session as well.  Volumes have increased a bit, but still aren’t too high as I hit the ‘send’ button at 4:52 a.m. Eastern time…and the dollar index isn’t doing much. That’s more than enough for one day…too much, actually…and I’ll see you here tomorrow.last_img read more

Rice University to Consider Invitation to Join the WAC

first_imgAddThis Share Contact: Michael Cinelli Phone: (713) 527-4807 Rice University to Consider Invitation to Join the WAC The Rice University Board of Governors has affirmed Rice’s intention to proceed with discussions about joining the Western Athletic Conference based on today’s invitation. The completion of this negotiation would make Rice a member of thelargest Division I-A conference in the nation.”For the past several months, following the collapse of the Southwest Conference, the Board of Governors and I have been engaged in a careful review of the university’s options regarding intercollegiate athletics in consultation with many members of the Rice community,” Rice president Malcolm Gillis said. “All options, and the corresponding costs of each, were discussed at length and on multiple occasions with members of the Board. This process involved faculty, student leaders, the Athletics Committee, members of the administration and many alumni. The feedback from all constituencies has been extraordinarily productive.” Rice would join two other Southwest Conference members-Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University-as part of an expanded WAC. The WAC’s expansion from 10 teams to 16 teams-split into two eight-team divisions-will be completed in time for the 1996 football season, possibly sooner for other sports. Current members of the WAC include the Air Force Academy, Colorado State, UT-El Paso, Wyoming, Brigham Young, Fresno State, Hawaii, New Mexico, SanDiego State and Utah. The process of finding a new athletic conference for Rice was anexhaustive one, Gillis said.”We talked at length to presidents and commissioners in several existing athletic conferences,” he said. “We explored membership in conferences at all levels, I-A through III, and considered at great length the implications of independent status, again at all three levels.” When WAC officials indicated that the expanded conference would consist of two divisions, the decision by Rice actively to consider becoming a member was enhanced. Eastern Division conference members will likely include SMU, TCU, Tulsa, Colorado State, UTEP, New Mexico, and either Air Force or Wyoming. Tulsa is one of the new schools also expected to join the WAC. The other new members, which would affiliate with the WAC’s Western Division, are San Jose Stateand Nevada-Las Vegas.”We believe that an affiliation with the new 16-team Western Athletic Conference and maintenance of a Division I-Aintercollegiate program is in Rice’s best interest,” Gillis said.”We have a group of outstanding coaches dedicated to high academic and athletic standards in both men’s and women’s sports,” he added. “We have students who can compete at the highest level of athletics as in so many other areas of extracurricular activity. We are committed to managing the revenues and costs of intercollegiate athletics so that academic programs do not suffer.” Rice became a charter member of the Southwest Conference in 1914, two years after it opened its doors to students. It has a total student enrollment of 4,257 and a full-time faculty of 437. ###last_img read more

Study shows connection between specific genes and ADHD

first_imgReviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Nov 30 2018There is a clear connection between specific genes and ADHD.A new international study shows that if you have specific genetic variations, the probability of having ADHD is very high.”This is a break-through for the ADHD-research, and rise the biological base for the condition,” says Professor Jan Haavik at the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Research on Neuropsychiatric Disorders, University of Bergen.Related StoriesGenetic contribution to distractibility helps explain procrastinationMolecular switches may control lifespan and healthspan separately, genetic discovery suggestsLiving a healthy lifestyle may help offset genetic risk of dementiaThe study is published in Nature Genetics.Comparing genesHaavik has contributed to the first and biggest genetic study of its kind. The international study compared 20 000 persons with ADHD with 35 000 persons in a control group.”We hope that the demonstration of the genetic connection may alter the view on ADHD. The condition is not due to bad upbringing, bad environment or bad attitude,” Haavik points out.Disproving bad upbringingHaavik says that ADHD has been regarded differently through the history; from regarded as caused by bad upbringing and self-discipline to brain injury.”This study is the first study that shows vulnerability-genes for ADHD. This does not mean that environment play no role. The environment influences how we develop and if ADHD-symptoms occurs,” Haavik explains.”Persons with ADHD often struggle more that others. When others do not recognize their problems as real, it may make their life even harder. This study, however, shows that ADHD is most real and partly biologically anchored,” says Jan Haavik. Spotify rolls out feature that allows users to mute artists they dont

first_imgThere are a variety of reasons people might not like a certain musician. Perhaps they aren’t fans of the sound of an artists songs, or the artist has been involved in controversial activity. Credit: CC0 Public Domain Whatever the reason may be, Spotify users will now be able to mute artists they don’t want to hear from. The popular music streaming service is currently testing out a “don’t play this artist” feature in its latest iOS app, according to a report from The Verge. Once users decide to block the artist, songs from that artist will never play from a library, playlist, chart list or Spotify radio station. However, the block does not apply to songs the artist is featured in.The feature is not available across all Spotify platforms, though. While I was able to successfully use the feature on my iPhone 8 with iOS 12.1.2, I could not find the feature on my 2015 MacBook Air.To access the feature, users should first type in the name of an artist and click on the “…” button on the top right. Then, a page will appear with several options. Users should click on the “Don’t play this artist” button. From there, users will be returned to the artist’s home page and will receive a message that says, “Ok, we won’t play music from this artist…”Users can turn off the feature at any point by returning to the artist’s home page, clicking on the “…” button on the top right corner and selecting the “Remove” button from the subsequent menu.Spotify has experimented previously with blocking certain artists from appearing in playlists. In May 2018, the streaming service made a new policy about hate conduct and content that blocked music by R. Kelly and XXXTentacion from appearing in any of the playlists under Spotify’s name, like the popular “New Music Friday” and “Discover Weekly” playlists it generates and promotes on the home page. This move followed news of two new women accusing R. Kelly of sexual coercion and physical violence a few weeks prior, and of the late XXXTentacion being charged with the aggravated battery of his pregnant former girlfriend.Spotify ultimately reversed its original policy a few weeks later, noting that the “language was vague and left too many elements open to interpretation.”In response to the history of allegations of R. Kelly’s abuse, a “Mute R. Kelly” social media campaign arose in 2017, encouraging boycotts of the rapper’s music and performances. The controversy surrounding R. Kelly has grown since the start of this year, as Lifetime aired its docu-series “Surviving R. Kelly,” which investigated the rapper’s past. Some Spotify users have taken to Twitter to express their satisfaction with being able to mute R. Kelly. It is unclear when Spotify will expand the block feature to more devices.Spotify did not reply to a request for comment from USA TODAY about this new feature. Spotify cuts R.
