WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a comment posted on the ‘Wilmington MA Community Board Page’ and shared with the poster’s permission:Wilmington is very blessed and lucky to have a Police Chief like Chief Michael Begonis. Police departments talk about how valuable every life is and how they are fighting the opiate epidemic. Chief Begonis and his detectives/officers do what they say they will.I am a two time Iraq Combat Veteran who used heroine to deal with the invisible scars of war. The Chief of Police and his Narcotics Detectives took time out of their busy days to come to my grandparents house to talk to me about getting help and to tell me they were there for me if i ever needed it, no matter what. These men live the true values of to Protect and Serve. Yes, I am one life, but I am one life that was saved because of their love and support. I have zero connection to anyone in the Wilmington Police Department and I am one of many in our town struggling with this horrible addiction. These men made me feel as if I mattered when I thought I was nothing. They showed how much this police department cares about making a dent in this epidemic and that they will do what it takes to save a life no matter how hopeless I seemed.Yes, I understand Wilmington is not the most crime ridden area of this country, but that’s not the point. The point is that the Chief of Police will make the effort for the people of his town even if it takes him coming and just talking to someone. This is not an easy time to be a police officer and i think this town should see how devoted their Chief is to making an impact. Those interactions with his detectives and him were 4 years ago and because of them and others, I will be hitting 3 years in December, in that time I have bought my own home, had a beautiful baby girl and am very close to my Bachelors Degree in Human Services. These accomplishments would never have been possible with out their support and love. These are times when we are losing young people at alarming numbers to the opiate epidemic and there are no easy answers to put a dent in it, but one life is worth the time to the Chief because one life lost sends huge repercussions through whole families and communities. You should be proud to be residents of the Town of Wilmington and should feel pretty damn good that you have a Police Chief who doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the walk and everything starts from the top. I just hope that by the end of his reign as Police Chief that I am one of many saved lives. He deserves to be held in the highest regard by his town because he will fight to protect the lives of every single one of you and that’s not something you can say about a lot of towns.Thank you Chief and your entire department for being a part of saving this one life. I will be eternally grateful to you and will always be proud to say I am from the town of Wilmington. I’m sorry this was so long but I tried to keep it short.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Photo: PIDPrime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday called upon the international organisations including the United Nations (UN) to play a strong role in repatriation of the Rohingya people from Bangladesh.“Giving shelter to over one million forcibly displaced Rohingyas is a huge burden for us and how long we will bear the load? They must go back to their homeland of Myanma’s Rakhaine state,” she said. The premier added: “So we want you to play a more proactive role in this regard.”The prime minister said this when United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Pilippo Gandhi, UN Under Secretary General (Human Affairs) Mark Lowcock and Director General of International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Antonio Vitorino paid a joint courtesy call on her at her Jatiya Sangsad office in Dhaka in the evening. After the meeting, PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the newsmen.Sheikh Hasina thanked the UN organisations as well as other international bodies and different countries for extending their support to Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue. She said the local people are suffering a lot due to exodus of over one million Rohingyas into Cox’s Bazar. “Their cultivable land and even local forest resources are being ruined for the presence of the Rohingyas,” she said.Sheikh Hasina warned of disasters, saying natural calamity, cyclone and landslide in the hill areas can take place at any time particularly in the coming monsoon for which the Rohingyas may be affected seriously.“So, it’s better to shift them from this place, otherwise the risk factors will be high,” she added. The premier, however, mentioned that the government is developing an island named Bhashanchar where more than 100,000 Rohingyas will be shifted with better living and other facilities.About education of the Rohingya children, the prime minister said the teachers who entered Bangladesh with them are providing informal education to the children. In reply, the three top UN officials highly appreciated the prime minister for her humanitarian gesture of giving shelter over one million Rohingyas in Bangladesh.Pointing out their visit to Myanmar, they informed the prime minister that they sought access of the UNDP and UNHCR to Myanmar on the repatriation of Rohingyas.“We’re committed to continuing help Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue, especially providing education for the Rohingya children,” they said. The UN officials said they held talks and signed agreements with the Myanmar authorities on the Rohingya repatriation. But the progress is very slow in this regard, they remarked.State minister for foreign affairs Md Shahriar Alam, PM’s principal secretary Md Nojibur Rahman, foreign secretary Md Shahidul Haque and UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh Mia Seppo were also present at the meeting.

(Baltimore Police via AP) BALTIMORE (AP) — Two Baltimore schools police officer have been charged after cellphone video surfaced showing one of them slapping and kicking a teen at a school while the second officer stood by.Anthony Spence, 44, and Saverna Bias, 53, turned themselves in Tuesday night, city police announced in a statement Wednesday morning. Both are charged with second-degree assault and misconduct in office. Spence is also charged with second-degree child abuse. Online court records show both posted bond and were released Wednesday.Spence acknowledged in a telephone conversation with The Associated Press on Friday that he was the subject of a criminal investigation into the actions captured on cellphone video last week at the REACH Partnership School. Spence said last week that he wouldn’t discuss the matter because the news media would “twist” the story.“Right now I’m the bad guy,” he said. He referred questions to his lawyer, Michael Davey, who didn’t immediately respond to a phone call Wednesday morning.City police began a criminal investigation into last week’s incident at the school after the eight-second clip surfaced. The school district has its own police force separate from city police. The school police department is handling the internal investigation and city police said in the statement Wednesday that the case is now in the hands of the city’s State’s Attorney’s Office’s public integrity unit.School officials initially said officers responded to a reported intruder, and that the young man in the video wasn’t a REACH student. On Friday, the school system said in a statement that he is “believed to be a student on the school’s roster,” as asserted by his lawyer, Lauren Geisser. Geisser has said he’s a 10th-grader.On Monday, Baltimore City Schools CEO Gregory Thornton met with parents to discuss the video and said he will review training and selection of school police officers. The two officers were put on paid administrative leave. School Police Chief Marshall Goodwin is also on leave, but officials have not said why.

Even if you do not sweat it out in the gym very morning, swapping out just a few minutes of sedentary time with some sort of movement can help you live longer, suggests new research. In the study involving over 3,000 people aged 50 to 79, the researchers found that the least active people were five times more likely to die during the study period than the most active people and three times more likely than those in the middle range for activity.“You did not have to even get a good sweat to experience the reduced likelihood of mortality,” said study lead author Ezra Fishman from University of Pennsylvania in the US. “Activity doesn’t have to be especially vigorous to be beneficial. That’s the public health message,” Fishman noted. For the study, the participants wore ultra-sensitive activity trackers, called accelerometers, for seven days, generating data compiled by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For these same people, the agency then tracked mortality for the next eight years.“When we compare people who exercise the same amount, those who sit less and move around more tend to live longer,” Fishman said. “The folks who were walking around, washing the dishes, sweeping the floor tended to live longer than the people who were sitting at a desk,” Fishman noted. Though the scientists did not discover any magic threshold for the amount a person needs to move to improve mortality, they did learn that even adding just 10 minutes per day of light activity could make a difference.
What’s new: The budgeting tool — which generates a suggested monthly spend based on your financial data — renders spending visually using colored bar graphs. Things like interest rates are adjusted by a number of colored sliders and can be viewed over a number of periods, including a 12-month outlook. The debt reduction tool, which helps users design a repayment plan for credit cards and other debt, has been simplified. Users now can input their credit card information, download interest rates and minimum payment information and then Quicken formulates a payment plan. The tool allows you to see how you can prioritize debts, such as paying off smaller debts first. Quicken 2012 starts at a one-time fee of $30 for the starter edition, which is aimed at consumers, $60 for the deluxe edition, which includes debt reduction tools, and $90 for the premier edition which includes more investment management options. What you might like: The look and feel has been improved over previous versions, including the overall experience of the budget and debt tools. For example, the colored debt reduction line graph makes it easy to see how much interest you will pay over time. Quicken also says the new software is faster and can handle larger data files than last year’s version, which is probably true. What you might not like: We encountered the same problem we always do with Quicken software: You have to double check your entries. As powerful an automated tool as Quicken is, it makes assumptions on how it categorizes spending and expenses it imports from credit cards and checking accounts, grouping expenses into categories such as food and dining, automotive or entertainment. These labels are correct a lot of the time but, to be IRS-ready, you’ll need to sit down each month and confirm that Quicken is modeling your finances properly.Bottom line: While these improvements are nice, they aren’t dramatic. If last year’s model — or really any model of Quicken — is doing the job for you, then you may consider sticking with it. This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now October 20, 2011 Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. If you’ve been searching for an easier way to keep track of your budget and managing expenses, then you might consider buying or upgrading to the recently-released 2012 version of Quicken. While it isn’t a major overhaul compared to last year’s unveiling of its amped-up Web-friendly capabilities, the latest version of this popular finance management software includes a significant face-lift to the tools that help users plan spending and reduce debt.Quicken 2012 pulls in financial data from the Web, primarily from online bank accounts and credit cards, and then analyzes it to render a “real-time” picture of a user’s finances. Then it helps make budgeting decisions, pay bills and save money. These aren’t new features, but Quicken has updated the look and feel of some of its budgeting tools to make them more intuitive.Considering Quicken is a favorite of small business owners trying to stay on top of their finances, we arranged for a prelaunch demo. Here’s a look at what makes it a worthwhile investment for your business, and also why it may not be. min read Enroll Now for Free
iPad 2Image credit: leondel via Flickr This story originally appeared on CNBC Register Now » Where will growth come from?Investors should focus on the upcoming product cycle and new product categories to drive growth, but shouldn’t expect these catalysts until the second half of this year, analysts said. According to reports, Apple is planning to launch two larger iPhone models, a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch version, this fall. The current iPhone 5S is a 4-inch model.Lamba said he expects the 4.7-inch model to be introduced around September and the 5.5-inch unit to launch around November. It’s also speculated that the company will roll out a wearable product, likely an iWatch, during the second half of this year, according to analysts.”We expect investors to focus on the new products to be introduced later this year instead of the company’s performance in the March or guidance for June,” Lamba said in his note. “The company is clearly off to a slower start for the year but product launches in the second half should help improve the sentiment and its financial performance.”Apple’s stock has risen more than 30 percent over the last year to about $530 a share. However, it is down from its 52-week high of $575.14. Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Apple is expected to report fiscal second-quarter earnings of $10.18 per share—which is just 1 percent growth year over year—on revenue of $43.53 billion, according to a survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters. The iPhone maker has forecast its revenue would fall to between $42 billion and $44 billion in the quarter, no better than it did in the same period last year.Marshall, who has a “buy” rating on the stock with a price target of $600, estimates the company will post more conservative earningsof $9.75 per share on revenue of $42.7 billion.Part of the tepid mood on the quarter is the early release of the iPhone 5S to international markets.Apple launched its latest iPhone in markets outside the U.S. during the fourth quarter of 2013, which is much earlier than the company normally sells its updated smartphone in foreign markets. Consumers who would have normally bought Apple’s latest smartphone in the company’s second quarter, likely already made a purchase in a previous quarter.”While this is the case almost every year due to AAPL’s once-a-year product release cycle, we believe the pause this year could be magnified,” he said.During the company’s second quarter last year it sold 37.4 million iPhones and 19.5 million iPads, which is a bit stronger than what the company is estimated to have sold during the same period this year. The Street is predicting Apple shipped 37 million iPhones and 19.5 million iPads in the second quarter, which is a far cry from the company’s record-breaking first quarter this year when it sold 51 million iPhones and 26 million iPads.”We expect iPhone sales to fall short of expectations while iPad results should be in-line. Our checks indicated that iPhone shipments could be around 35 million units in the quarter,” said Abhey Lamba, a senior technology analyst at Mizuho Securities, in a recent note to clients.”For iPads, the company experienced increasing competition from lower-cost Android offerings though iPads continue to offer significant advantage over other solutions.”Lamba, who has a “buy” rating on the stock and a $575 price target, also estimates that revenue and EPS for the second quarter will fall below consensus. He predicts that the company will report revenue between $42 billion and $43 billion with EPS coming in around $9.75 to $10. With many consumers holding out for the new iPhone 6 model and subsequently not driving up sales, Apple is likely to report unimpressive earnings after the bell on Wednesday, analysts say. Many are waiting for the iPhone 6 to hit the market before they upgrade their smartphones and that means dull quarterly earnings for the Cupertino, Calif.-based company.”With the much anticipated iPhone 6 due for release later this year, we believe many potential iPhone buyers will pause before the major upgrade,” said Brian Marshall, an analyst at ISI Group, in a recent note to clients. On Tuesday, the 16th of October, GitHub hosted Open Source and Copyright: from Industry 4.0 to SMEs in Brussels. Partnering with OpenForum Europe and Red Hat, the event was designed to raise awareness of the EU Copyright Directive among developers and policymakers. GitHub has made its position on the controversial legislation clear, saying that while “current copyright laws are outdated in many respects and need modernization, we are concerned that some aspects of the EU’s proposed copyright reform package would inadvertently affect software.” The event included further discussion on topics such as: Policy: For GitHub, Abby Vollmer shared how developers have been especially effective in getting policymakers to respond to problems with the copyright proposal and asked them to continue reaching out to policymakers about a technical fix to protect open source. Developers: Evis Barbullushi from Red Hat explained why open source is so fundamental to software and critical to the EU, using examples of what open source powers every day. He also highlighted the world-class and commercially mainstream nature of open source. SMEs: Sebastiano Toffaletti (from the European Digital SME Alliance) described concerns about the copyright proposal from the perspective of SMEs, including how efforts to regulate large platforms can end up harming SMEs even if they’re not the target. Research and academia: Roberto Di Cosmo (Software Heritage) wrapped up the talks by noting that he “should not be here, because, in a world in which software was better understood and valued, policymakers would never introduce a proposal that inadvertently puts software at great risk, and motivated developers to fix this underlying problem.” In its previous EU copyright proposal update, GitHub explained that the EU Council, Parliament, and Commission were ready to begin final-stage negotiations of the copyright proposal. These three institutions are now working on the exceptions to copyright for text and data mining (Article 3), among other technical elements of the proposal. Article 13 would likely drive many platforms to use upload filters on user-generated content. Article 2 defines which services are in the scope of Article 13, Articles 2 and 13 will be discussed together. This means developers can still contact policymakers with thoughts on what outcomes are best for software development. Read Next The LLVM project is ditching SVN for GitHub. Share Wednesday, May 1, 2019 OTTAWA — The federal plan to revamp Canada’s air-security screening system is running into headwinds from major airlines, which are urging the government to take things slow to get the changes right. In their last budget, the Liberals announced plans to turn the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, the Crown corporation responsible for screening people and baggage, into an independent, not-for-profit agency.Transport Minister Marc Garneau says the new model will benefit the travelling public. The National Airlines Council of Canada, which represents the country’s four largest carriers, told MPs on the House of Commons transport committee Tuesday that the government expects the new system to be in place by next April. However, the council says, many important questions still need to be answered. For instance, while the budget sets aside millions of dollars in transition funding, the council is unclear on how the government arrived at the figure or what it includes. The airline industry is already grappling with major challenges, including the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max airplanes and planning for new passenger rights rules, and “we are again confronted with a government-imposed deadline and process,” council president Massimo Bergamini told the committee.More news: Canada raises travel warning amid escalating protests in Hong Kong“Surely no one would suggest that this way of conducting government business meets the standard of unhurried, prudent decision-making that our air carriers are expected to exemplify.”The current screening authority was created following the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the United States, and a new user-pay security levy was ushered in to support the agency.A federal transportation review three years ago found that the agency, while fulfilling its screening mandate, had been unable to meet the challenge of increasing demands with limited resources. The review noted that Canadian travellers were paying one of the highest aviation-security fees in the world, but screening queues were getting longer. The airlines council says the goal of screening 85 per cent of passengers within 15 minutes or less at Canada’s eight largest airports is not feasible with existing equipment and staffing levels. The government hopes that spinning off the agency will result in more modern, efficient screening. Garneau has compared the move to the 1990s privatization of air-traffic control services through the creation of Nav Canada.More news: Universal enhances popular Harry Potter vacation package with new perksThe airlines council says the comparison is “disingenuous at best.”“The success of the Nav Canada model was the result of almost two years of tough negotiations, with almost weekly meetings where everything was on the table,” Bergamini said Tuesday. When Transport Canada consulted industry players two years ago on the future of the screening authority, the airlines supported the principle of transferring its functions to a not-for-profit organization – with a number of serious questions and caveats, he said. But the government has not worked with the industry since to address the concerns, Bergamini said.Ferio Pugliese, an Air Canada vice-president, said reform of the air-screening agency must meet the needs of the industry and the travelling public.“A new model is necessary to improve efficiencies and to reduce wait times, delayed departures and missed connections for travellers,” he told the committee.“While this reform is welcomed, Air Canada cautions that in order to get it right, it must be done in a thoughtful, well-planned and fiscally responsible manner.” Tags: CATSA, Ottawa Canada’s airlines want longer runway for security screening overhaul By: The Canadian Press << Previous PostNext Post >>
