23 October 2015 Nelson Mandela’s widow, Graça Machel, celebrated her 70th birthday which fell on 21 October, in her home country of Mozambique with a cause close to her heart.Machel’s birthday was close to World Food Day on 16 October – an annual event founded by the United Nations to highlight issues of food security and global hunger. It inspired her to celebrate her special day early, by leading a meal-packing drive in aid of Zizile Institute for Child Development in Mozambique. That is one out of every eight people on the planet, making hunger number one on the list of the world’s top 10 health risks.“Hunger kills more people every year than Aids, malaria and tuberculosis combined,” Machel said. “Even worse, it is the single biggest solvable problem facing the world today.”According to Stop Hunger Now, stunted mental and physical growth caused by malnourishment in the first 1 000 days of life is mostly irreversible, and there are 3.1 million children in South Africa who suffer from household hunger.PartnershipsThe initiative was partnered by Barloworld Equipment, the dealer for Cat earthmoving machines, and car rental company, Avis.“The company is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, a United Nations initiative which encourages businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their implementation,” said Lesibana Ledwaba, the executive director of strategy, risk and sustainability at Barloworld Equipment. “These principles guide our activities across every facet of the business, including our (corporate social investment) policy, which drives our participation in initiatives such as this one.”FAST FACTS: What’s in the Stop Hunger Now pack? #StopHungerNow,#70kMealChallengepic.twitter.com/gNJla1BBuN— Barloworld Limited (@BarloworldLtd) October 15, 2015About Stop Hunger NowRay Buchanan, an ordained United Methodist minister, created the organisation because he wanted to see the end of hunger in his lifetime.“Our mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilise the necessary resources,” reads the website.Graca MACHEL and Ray Buchanan founder of Stop Hunger Now in discussions at Barloworld Meal Challenge in Maputo pic.twitter.com/NmNqSm2Jog— Stop Hunger Now SA (@stophungernowsa) October 16, 2015Machel’s place in historyMachel is unique: she is the only woman in history to have been first lady of two countries. As the wife of Samora Machel, she was the first lady of Mozambique from 1975 to 1986, until the president’s death in a plane crash. Later, as the wife of Nelson Mandela, she was the first lady of South Africa from 1998 to 1999.A politician and humanitarian in her own right, she is an international advocate for women’s and children’s rights and in 1997 was made a British dame for her humanitarian work.SouthAfrica.info reporter
28 August 2013 South Africa’s economy rebounded in the second quarter, growing at 3.0 percent compared to 0.9 percent in the first quarter, with manufacturing the main driver of the growth, Statistics SA reported on Tuesday. “The seasonally adjusted real GDP [gross domestic product] at market prices for the second quarter of 2013 increased by an annualised rate of 3.0 percent compared with an increase of 0.9 percent during the first quarter of 2013,” Stats SA said in a statement. The nominal GDP at market prices during the second quarter was R836-billion, R23-billion more than in the first quarter. StatsSA attributed the growth to increased activity in manufacturing (up by 1.7 percentage points), finance, real estate and business services (up by 0.8 of a percentage point), the wholesale, retail and motor trade, and catering and accommodation (both up by 0.4 of a percentage point). The mining, agriculture, foresty and fishing were among the negative contributors to second-quarter GDP. South Africa’s manufacturing industry reflected positive growth of 11.5 percent, due to higher production in basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery, motor vehicles, parts and accessories, glass and non-metallic products, and textiles, clothing and leather products. The growth in finance, real estate and business services was due to increased activities in the banking sector and equity, bond and other financial markets. The mining and quarrying industry reflected negative growth of 5.6 percent, due to lower production in the mining of gold, “other” metal ores (including platinum) and “other” mining and quarrying (including diamonds). The unadjusted real GDP at market prices for the second quarter of 2013 increased by 2.0 percent compared with the second quarter of 2012. The estimate of GDP for the first six months of 2013 increased by 2.0 percent compared with the corresponding period in 2012. Source: SAnews.gov.za

Stay further reported that an email response from a Twitter rep stated that the company “assumed (apparently incorrectly) that people were only using this method occasionally.”The change in the API limits the number of username/password verifications to 15 per hour. According to the afore-linked developer wiki, “Because this method can be a vector for a brute force dictionary attack to determine a user’s password, it is limited to 15 requests per 60 minute period (starting from your first request).” The wiki language was changed June 29.Granted, Twitter has had a bit of a media tsunami on its hands lately, but we still must note that no official announcement has been made about the API changes. This seems to be the case with other API changes, as well. For example, earlier this month, API request limits were increased from 100 to 150, as several blogs and end users noted at that time. No official announcement was made; the information was confirmed, as with this most recent change, through an update to the API wiki.Although the company is usually tight-lipped, do you think developers whose apps and livelihoods rely on the service and the API deserve a dedicated blog? Google Code is a great resource that acknowledges the ecosystem of apps built around that company’s APIs.Even if Twitter can’t afford to support developers with resources of a Googlesque stature, we do tend to feel that developers who rely on the API deserve advance warning of certain changes, even ones the company might consider minor. When you drive a borrowed car, it takes a few moments to figure out how to operate the windshield wipers and the headlights. But in your own car, your hand reaches for these switches without thinking.Using the psychrometric chart is a little like driving a car. If you use the psychrometric chart every day, you don’t have to orient yourself. But if you are like me, and you only consult the psychrometric chart two or three times a year, it’s useful to refer to a cheat sheet every time you use it.The psychometric chart (see Image #2, below) is a graph that shows (among other things) the relationships between air temperature, relative humidity, and dew points under a variety of conditions. The psychrometric chart is your friend. Like the periodic table of the elements, it’s a very useful invention. It organizes a lot of information and presents it graphically, allowing builders, HVAC contractors, and building scientists to answer certain questions quickly.Remember: if you need an answer to a question involving dew points or relative humidity, consulting the psychrometric chart is much easier than making calculations using a formula. Here is my list of the top five things that builders need to know about air and water vapor.1. Cold air can’t hold as much moisture as warm air. When the outdoor air is at 10°F, it isn’t holding much moisture — even if the relative humidity (RH) of the air is 90%. (In Comment #1 below, Bill Rose notes that “Saying that cold air can hold less water is convenient shorthand.” He goes on to note that in some instances — for example, when air in a stud bay is bounded by surfaces of different temperatures — the shorthand rule doesn’t apply. Aficionados of Marathi cinema and fans of iconic Marathi litterateur P.L. Deshpande — affectionately known as ‘Pu La’ — have news to cheer about as the city-based National Film Archive of India (NFAI) has acquired rare footage from a ‘lost’ Marathi film classic of the 1940s which starred Deshpande. The film, Vande Mataram (1948) directed by Ram Gabale, is a much sought-after memorabilia item high on the lists of Marathi film collectors and devotees of Pu La’s work.It marked the first time that the multi-faceted Deshpande, who starred alongside his wife Sunita, played the lead role following minor appearances in earlier films, Kuber (1947) and Bhagyaresha (1948).“The 35-minute footage that we have received has rekindled hopes that the complete film may yet be discovered. The footage, in form of a VHS tape, was given to us by Dinesh Thakur (Sunita Deshpande’s nephew) and film historian Satish Jakatdar along with U-matic tapes which contain previously unseen footage of Pu La playing the harmonium,” said Prakash Magdum, Director, NFAI.He informed that while the sound quality was all right, there was dire need to enhance the picture quality of the footage.Vande Mataram, made immediately after Independence but set during the freedom struggle, was a heady confluence of the most formidable talents to grace Marathi cinema during its heyday in the late 1940s. The film, shot in Kolhapur, was written by yet another legendary Marathi literary figure, the famed poet-writer Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar who also provided the lyrics, while the music was composed by renowned singer Sudhir Phadke. It was edited by Raja Thakur (who later became a director in his own right), helmed by the talented Mr. Gabale, a Prabhat Studios regular, and was produced by the maverick P.R. Bhide. The film, with its memorable music and songs, focuses on the patriotism of ordinary folks and is laced with gentle humour.“VandeMataram is indeed remarkable for the dazzling array of talent associated with it as Madgulkar, Pu La and Phadke constituted the veritable trinity of Marathi cinema during its golden age in the late 1940s and 50s. Its ‘lost film’ status has lent it a certain aura. The film was very dear to its composer, Sudhir Phadke, who had in fact visited Mr. Thakur’s residence in Mumbai following Pu La’s death in 2000 to search if the latter had preserved it in his collection,” said Mr. Magdum, speaking to The Hindu. He said that the footage featured a couple of songs and has Pu La singing a powada (ballad).“In particular, one song from this film, Ved Mantrahun Vandya, became a huge hit and endures in its popularity even till this day,” said Mr. Magdum. He further said that the acquisition was doubly delightful as by a happy coincidence this year happens to be the birth centenary of P.L. Deshpande, G.D. Madgulkar and Sudhir Phadke. Incidentally 2018 was the birth centenary of the film’s producer, P.R. Bhide.“Bhide was an interesting character who dabbled in a number of things including the cinema. Besides Vande Mataram, the other notable film he produced was Lalat (1947) where his auteurist tendencies were in full display in his highly innovative experiment of using 16 mm film to record sound instead of film,” Mr. Magdum said, remarking that Bhide later exited cinema to become a spiritual godman, establishing the Manashakti Center in Lonavla and assuming the name of ‘Swami Vijnananand’.Of the other memorabilia acquired by the NFAI, one of the two hour-long U-matic cassettes showcase the considerable Harmonium skills of the versatile Mr. Deshpande and were recorded sometime in Mumbai in the 1980s.The other cassette has his inimitable recitation of some of his beloved characters from his literary ouvre. In December 2015, the NFAI had received another rare ‘Pu La’ memorabilia in the form of Deshpande’s original handwritten script of the enduring 1953 Marathi classic Gulacha Ganpati which was later digitized by them.
WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a comment posted on the ‘Wilmington MA Community Board Page’ and shared with the poster’s permission:Wilmington is very blessed and lucky to have a Police Chief like Chief Michael Begonis. Police departments talk about how valuable every life is and how they are fighting the opiate epidemic. Chief Begonis and his detectives/officers do what they say they will.I am a two time Iraq Combat Veteran who used heroine to deal with the invisible scars of war. The Chief of Police and his Narcotics Detectives took time out of their busy days to come to my grandparents house to talk to me about getting help and to tell me they were there for me if i ever needed it, no matter what. These men live the true values of to Protect and Serve. Yes, I am one life, but I am one life that was saved because of their love and support. I have zero connection to anyone in the Wilmington Police Department and I am one of many in our town struggling with this horrible addiction. These men made me feel as if I mattered when I thought I was nothing. They showed how much this police department cares about making a dent in this epidemic and that they will do what it takes to save a life no matter how hopeless I seemed.Yes, I understand Wilmington is not the most crime ridden area of this country, but that’s not the point. The point is that the Chief of Police will make the effort for the people of his town even if it takes him coming and just talking to someone. This is not an easy time to be a police officer and i think this town should see how devoted their Chief is to making an impact. Those interactions with his detectives and him were 4 years ago and because of them and others, I will be hitting 3 years in December, in that time I have bought my own home, had a beautiful baby girl and am very close to my Bachelors Degree in Human Services. These accomplishments would never have been possible with out their support and love. These are times when we are losing young people at alarming numbers to the opiate epidemic and there are no easy answers to put a dent in it, but one life is worth the time to the Chief because one life lost sends huge repercussions through whole families and communities. You should be proud to be residents of the Town of Wilmington and should feel pretty damn good that you have a Police Chief who doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the walk and everything starts from the top. I just hope that by the end of his reign as Police Chief that I am one of many saved lives. He deserves to be held in the highest regard by his town because he will fight to protect the lives of every single one of you and that’s not something you can say about a lot of towns.Thank you Chief and your entire department for being a part of saving this one life. I will be eternally grateful to you and will always be proud to say I am from the town of Wilmington. I’m sorry this was so long but I tried to keep it short.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. What’s new: The budgeting tool — which generates a suggested monthly spend based on your financial data — renders spending visually using colored bar graphs. Things like interest rates are adjusted by a number of colored sliders and can be viewed over a number of periods, including a 12-month outlook. The debt reduction tool, which helps users design a repayment plan for credit cards and other debt, has been simplified. Users now can input their credit card information, download interest rates and minimum payment information and then Quicken formulates a payment plan. The tool allows you to see how you can prioritize debts, such as paying off smaller debts first. Quicken 2012 starts at a one-time fee of $30 for the starter edition, which is aimed at consumers, $60 for the deluxe edition, which includes debt reduction tools, and $90 for the premier edition which includes more investment management options. What you might like: The look and feel has been improved over previous versions, including the overall experience of the budget and debt tools. For example, the colored debt reduction line graph makes it easy to see how much interest you will pay over time. Quicken also says the new software is faster and can handle larger data files than last year’s version, which is probably true. What you might not like: We encountered the same problem we always do with Quicken software: You have to double check your entries. As powerful an automated tool as Quicken is, it makes assumptions on how it categorizes spending and expenses it imports from credit cards and checking accounts, grouping expenses into categories such as food and dining, automotive or entertainment. These labels are correct a lot of the time but, to be IRS-ready, you’ll need to sit down each month and confirm that Quicken is modeling your finances properly.Bottom line: While these improvements are nice, they aren’t dramatic. If last year’s model — or really any model of Quicken — is doing the job for you, then you may consider sticking with it. This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now October 20, 2011 Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. If you’ve been searching for an easier way to keep track of your budget and managing expenses, then you might consider buying or upgrading to the recently-released 2012 version of Quicken. While it isn’t a major overhaul compared to last year’s unveiling of its amped-up Web-friendly capabilities, the latest version of this popular finance management software includes a significant face-lift to the tools that help users plan spending and reduce debt.Quicken 2012 pulls in financial data from the Web, primarily from online bank accounts and credit cards, and then analyzes it to render a “real-time” picture of a user’s finances. Then it helps make budgeting decisions, pay bills and save money. These aren’t new features, but Quicken has updated the look and feel of some of its budgeting tools to make them more intuitive.Considering Quicken is a favorite of small business owners trying to stay on top of their finances, we arranged for a prelaunch demo. Here’s a look at what makes it a worthwhile investment for your business, and also why it may not be. min read Enroll Now for Free
