Maternal Undernutrition and Adolescent Girls

After all, around the world girls under the age of 18 may be married as well as mothers. If they are not mothers already, reaching out to adolescent girls ensures that they will have necessary nutrition information and tools they need before they even become pregnant.Bhavishya Alliance is a Mumbai based multi-sector partnership with a focus on reducing undernutrition in Maharashtra, India. The Girls Gaining Ground (GGG) program is Bhavishya Alliance’s pilot nutrition and health intervention which focuses on adolescent girls as future mothers. GGG combines a strong focus on maternal nutrition and health along with a girl’s empowerment component, benefiting groups of girls in some of the most underserved tribal communities in Maharashtra state. The program itself focuses heavily on nutrition and health information, as well as giving girls the knowledge to access government health services. This includes information in accessing services such as iron supplements and access to facilities when giving birth. The groups take part in community mapping exercises which identify health and nutrition services near their communities.Local women serve as role-models and facilitators for each of the GGG groups, leading the curriculum on reproductive and sexual health, the importance of iron supplements, dispelling myths relating to foods during pregnancy, and the importance of delayed marriage and pregnancy for health. Storytelling, local songs and myths are emphasized in order for the curriculum to make an impact in the lives of the girls. For example, girls may enact plays, where the lead character, an adolescent girl, dies in childbirth after an early marriage and a difficult, unattended pregnancy. There is a special emphasis in the program on preparing girls nutritionally to become mothers. Facilitators chart hemoglobin levels and iron supplement intake and girls enrolled in the program use food diaries to record and discuss their daily intake of food. Where illiteracy is a challenge, facilitators use the girls’ verbal history to take down the diary. Along with a focus on quantity, facilitators use the colors of the Indian flag (green, orange and white) to ask girls and their families to diversify their food intake using locally available food sources. Some NGOs have supplemented the GGG program with seed distribution for families to start agricultural plots for food to be consumed within the family, rather than exported for sale outside the community. This innovative and exciting program may provide a model for other maternal nutrition programs that recognize the importance of including adolescent girls as beneficiaries of maternal nutrition programs. This is the third post by Emily Puckart on “Maternal Undernutrion: Evidence, Links, and Solutions.” Read the first and second.Share this: ShareEmailPrint To learn more, read:last_img read more

Saturday night, Buckeyes wide receivers coach Zach Smith, taking exception to what appears to be a recruiting pamphlet produced by Michigan, blasted the Wolverines on Twitter. Smith, who is clearly ticked off that Michigan is is promoting its assistant coach Jedd Fisch as a better alternative for recruits to develop under, fired back, boasting about Ohio State’s three victories in a row over the Wolverines.Smith also predicted a fourth straight victory and posted a photo of all of the rings he’s won in his coaching years. first_imgKolkata: The Central and the West Bengal governments will ink an MoU next week on the Deocha Pachami coal block – considered the world’s second largest and largest reserve in Asia, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced here on Wednesday. Banerjee said the block located in Birbhum district has an inferred reserve of 2.1 billion tons, and would generate employment for one lakh people. The work for the project would be completed in five years, and increase the earnings of both her state and the Central government, she said. The state government had earlier said about Rs 60,000-70,000 crore of investments, both direct and indirect, would be required for the project and it may go up to Rs one lakh crore depending on the exploitation of the coal block. The Deocha Pachami coal block was earlier offered jointly to West Bengal, Bihar, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam but subsequently, others had backed out of the asset allegedly citing cost and complexities in extracting the resources.last_img read more

Ohio State starting quarterback Braxton Miller looks to bounce back

Junior quarterback Braxton Miller (5) is tackled during a game against Wisconsin Sept. 28 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 31-24.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorFor the better part of the past two seasons, Ohio State’s junior quarterback Braxton Miller has been the crutch the Buckeyes lean on when things go wrong. But so far this season, Miller’s third as the starter for OSU, that crutch has started to splinter. Now with Iowa and the eighth-ranked run defense in the Football Bowl Subdivision coming to Columbus, Miller said Wednesday OSU has to be careful not to repeat its early season mistakes.“(Iowa has a) pretty good defense, you know, probably the best we’ve faced so far. Got to have good preparation throughout the whole week,” Miller said.Miller made his return from an MCL sprain against Wisconsin Sept. 28, throwing four touchdown passes, but then struggled against Northwestern the following week. No touchdowns and three turnovers, including two fumbles, had fans calling for redshirt-senior quarterback Kenny Guiton.Miller said he struggled against the Wildcats with ball security, but the fumbling issues are something that can be fixed.“I’ve been watching film on it. I really wasn’t holding the ball correctly when I was cutting (through) the holes, and I wasn’t holding the ball real tight and it’s an easy fix,” Miller said.Coach Urban Meyer said Miller played well against Northwestern, but he can’t ignore his issues with ball security.“I expect him to be ‘Braxton Miller’ with better ball security,” Meyer said to the media Wednesday. “You take away those two fumbles, he actually played pretty good that game, real good, but that’s like saying take away a bad golf shot on the 18th hole. That’s the way it is.”Despite his praise of Miller, Meyer said he was close to putting Guiton in the game after Miller’s second fumble.Since Northwestern, Meyer said he has noticed Miller working harder on holding onto the football.“I see a guy that I wanted to see and I did see, a guy that recognized the mistakes he made, and then he’s going to work hard to correct them,” Meyer said. “No. 1 was ball security, that was the No. 1 issue.”Miller said Wednesday the coaching staff made him carry a ball during team stretches to practice ball security.“It’s always just keep it tight when I take off and run, QB run or anything like that,” Miller said. “Throughout the stretching at the beginning of practice, it’s ‘hold it tight.’ They had me hold the ball throughout the whole stretch.”Although ball security has been a big focus for the coaching staff, it might not be the only issue Miller is struggling with.Miller said his knee made it difficult to run the way he wanted to against Northwestern, but he is almost back to full health.“I’d say just a little bit on my cutting-wise and you know,” Miller said. “Just not my old self in running a little bit, but I’m still working on it, it should be good.”Miller, though, is still a valuable leader for OSU, senior wide receiver Corey “Philly” Brown said after the game against Northwestern.“He’s still vocal. He’s still going to tell us what we need to do,” Brown said. “He’s the quarterback of the team so whenever he talks, everybody listens, and we’re just going to follow his lead and go where we need to go.”Miller will look to right his wrongs from the previous game when the Buckeyes kick off against the Hawkeyes Saturday, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Ohio Stadium. For Miller, success will depend on if he is able to get back to the standard he’s set for himself.“I wasn’t fully myself throughout the whole game,” Miller said. “Playing on grass a little bit, you know, little bit on my running, I just wasn’t my old self, I felt like and you know just got to keep getting healthy, getting treatment on it and just get back to my old ways.” read more

Hawaii Volcano Erupts From Summit Sends Huge Plume Into Sky

first_imgOfficials have said they didn’t expect the explosion to be deadly as long as people remained out of the closed national park. The explosion came after two weeks of volcanic activity and the opening of more than a dozen fissures east of the crater that spewed lava into neighborhoods, said Mike Poland, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享HONOLULU (AP) – Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted from its summit before dawn Thursday, shooting a dusty plume of ash about 30,000 feet (9,100 meters) into the sky. It’s one of five volcanoes that comprise the Big Island of Hawaii, and the only one currently erupting. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. An eruption in 1924 killed one person and sent rocks, ash and dust into the air for 17 days. Kilauea volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983.center_img The lava destroyed has destroyed at least 26 homes and 10 other structures. Scientists predicted it would mostly release trapped steam from flash-heated groundwater released as though it was a kitchen pressure cooker. The crater sits within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which has been closed since May 11 in preparation for an eruption. Communities a mile or two away may be showered by pea-size fragments or dusted with nontoxic ash, they said. Scientists warned on May 9 that a drop in the lava lake at the summit might create conditions for an explosion that could fling ash and boulders the size of refrigerators into the air.last_img read more

Kenai Continues Work On Accelerated Funding For Bluff Project

first_imgFacebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Kenai City Council will look at a resolution approving the request for accelerated funding for the Pre-Construction Engineering and Design Phase of the Kenai Bluffs Bank Stabilization Project up to the estimated cost of $1,000,000. Kenai City Manager Paul Ostrander told the council at its meeting in December that he would be pursuing accelerated funding for the project through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Ostrander: “What we are waiting on right now is the signing of the directors report, which is supposed to happen this month. Until that is signed, which signals the completion of the feasibility phase, they can’t move forward with the design phase. Once we get that signed report we will hopefully be moving forward with the design phase.”  If the project goes through to construction, the PED phase contribution would be credited towards the City’s 35% matching requirement, according to Ostrander. The project consists of constructing a berm about 5,000 feet long below the Kenai Bluffs toe. It is designed to prevent flood tides from washing away material that collects at the bluff toe and coastal storms from eroding the lower portion of the bluff. Ostrander: “Already there has been a request submitted to the Corps to consider acceleration of the design. So, the corps needs to consider that request, and approve it. Assuming that the corps does approve the accelerated design process then the money would go towards that.”  The Kenai City Council will look at the resolution at their meeting on Wednesday, January 16.last_img read more

Hogan Secretly Tries to Keep NFL Franchise in Prince Georges County
Hogan Secretly Tries to Keep NFL Franchise in Prince Georges County

first_imgBy Mark Gray, AFRO Staff Writer,  mgray@afro.comWith the District of Columbia ready to make a strong run at luring the professional football franchise back to the place it represents, Gov. Larry Hogan appears ready to call a Hail Mary to try and keep the team from leaving the free state.According to MarylandMatters.org – an independent, non-partisan, non-profit website that covers state politics – the Hogan administration reached the parameters of a deal with the U.S. Department of Interior to gain control of land near National Harbor as part of a strategy to keep Washington’s NFL from heading back to D.C.Oxon Cove Park is one of the sites being considered for the new Redskins stadium. (Courtesy Photo)The memorandum of understating involves a 300-acre tract at Oxon Cove Park, which is located inside the Capital Beltway just prior to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. This clandestine deal was reportedly negotiated between Maryland officials in September 2017 but wasn’t made public until a recent story published in The Washington Post.  It also reportedly involves two separate letters from Hogan and former Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker sent to President Donald J. Trump to request the Department of Interior transfer the site to the county.Maryland’s new potential home site being eyed for a possible NFL stadium is home to two popular attractions — the Oxon Cove Park and Oxon Hill Farm – that were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. According to The Post, the city’s lease on the stadium site, with the National Park Service, states the land must be used for “stadium purposes” or “recreational facilities, open space or public outdoor recreation opportunities,” only excluding commercial development.Washington’s NFL franchise has played in front of more empty seats despite a season where they remain in contention for the playoffs. However, despite the efforts of the new aggressive marketing team, they haven’t been able to improve the overall fan experience. Most games are filled with fans of opposing teams who purchase unused season tickets from disgruntled owners choosing not to brave the elements or deal with traffic problems heading into and leaving games. The original configuration has been altered as the team has removed thousands of seats due to declining fan interest. A new generation of fans – without allegiance to days when the franchise was among the NFL’s elite – have grown alienated and are not continuing the legacy of watching games in the stadium. During this dismal era – since Daniel M. Snyder wrestled the franchise away from Jack Kent Cook heirs – the organization confirms there is no longer a waiting list for season tickets.Another suburban Maryland stadium as home for the franchise appears to be a difficult sell for the fan base that has become disillusioned with traveling to FedEx Field, which has become antiquated.  Despite attempts to remodel the facility it remains less than state of the art by standards set by the new generation of stadiums around the NFL. Snyder reportedly commissioned an architect to begin design work on a new stadium that would revive memories of RFK Stadium although the lease at FedEx Field runs through 2027.The Post also reported that the organization and certain congressional leaders are pushing for a provision in a federal budget deal that would enable the club to build a new stadium at the site of the old RFK Stadium in Northeast, D.C.Amelia Chasse, Hogan’s communications director, reportedly said he has met with Snyder at least twice to discuss the Oxon Cove site as an ideal location for a new stadium.  However, elected officials in Prince George’s County feel they’ve been made bystanders on a high-profile project that would have a major impact on area residents.last_img read more

New optical technique able to detect a single radio signal amongst background
New optical technique able to detect a single radio signal amongst background

first_img(Phys.org)—A small team of researchers with the University of California has found a way to pick out a single short radio signal burst among a barrage of background noise. In their paper published in the journal Science, the team describes their technique, how it works, how accurate it is and the possible applications it might be used for. Michael Vasilyev, with the University of Texas offers a Perspectives piece on the work done by the team in the same journal issue, noting how some human organs have senses that rely on using a similar technique to make sense of the environment. Journal information: Science No extraterrestrial laser pulses detected from KIC 8462852, SETI reports Single-event noise discrimination. Credit: (c) Science 11 December 2015: Vol. 350 no. 6266 pp. 1343-1346, DOI: 10.1126/science.aac8446 More information: Subnoise detection of a fast random event, Science 11 December 2015: Vol. 350 no. 6266 pp. 1343-1346, DOI: 10.1126/science.aac8446ABSTRACTObservation of random, nonrepetitive phenomena is of critical importance in astronomy, spectroscopy, biology, and remote sensing. Heralded by weak signals, hidden in noise, they pose basic detection challenges. In contrast to repetitive waveforms, a single-instance signal cannot be separated from noise through averaging. Here, we show that a fast, randomly occurring event can be detected and extracted from a noisy background without conventional averaging. An isolated 80-picosecond pulse was received with confidence level exceeding 99%, even when accompanied by noise. Our detector relies on instantaneous spectral cloning and a single-step, coherent field processor. The ability to extract fast, subnoise events is expected to increase detection sensitivity in multiple disciplines. Additionally, the new spectral-cloning receiver can potentially intercept communication signals that are presently considered secure.Press release © 2015 Phys.orgcenter_img As Vasilyev notes, there are a lot of areas in science that could benefit from an ability to isolate a single short signal amongst a stream of noise—astronomy, is just one example. Currently it is impossible to separate out a unique signal if there is just one burst present—there needs to be multiple examples. That could change in the near future as the researchers on this new effort have developed a way to convert radio signals to optical signals that can be processed to filter, separate and identify individual components. The team started with converting the radio signals to optical signals because the latter are more sensitive to changes in frequency—to make the conversation, the team looped the signals so that they could gather enough data for averaging. Next they used two tunable optical frequency combs—when the spectrums were overlapped it allowed for alignment of the components which caused the signal to be amplified as compared to other background noise, which then allowed it to be uniquely identified. The team tested their technique by running 4,720 detection attempts and found it to be better than 99 percent accurate. The researchers believe their technique can be broadened to include the detection of a wide variety of signals, from optic applications to those that look for microwaves. It could also possibly be modified for use in seemingly unrelated research areas such as sensing the spontaneous decay of a molecule. There also exists the possibility that the new detector could be used to spot signals that to date have gone undetected, perhaps revealing the existence of some new type of phenomena.
