10 Enemies of Productivity

first_imgNo Goals: You need a target. Without a target, there is nothing to aim for. Without goals, you are simply drifting, reacting to whatever acts on you. Goals are what allow you to be proactive and take initiative. Without goals, you can be very busy without being productive. No Plan: A well thought-out, written plan is the map that guides your actions. Without a plan to reach your goals, the actions you take won’t get you where you want to go.No Master List: A yellow legal pad might be the right tool to track all of the many things that come into your life, but it’s not likely. You need a master list of every project, every task, and every piece of incoming information you need to take action on. Without this list, commitments are lost, and so is your productivity. No Weekly Review: Once a week (at minimum), you have to spend the time evaluating your priorities and adjusting your plans. Without spending time reviewing your priorities and making adjustments to your calendar, you can’t make progress on your most important priorities. In fact, you won’t even know what your priorities are.No Time Blocking: Part of a good weekly review is blocking the time you need to take action on your most important priorities. If you don’t take time to plan your week, then others will plan your week for you.Over-committed: Busy people get more done. Over-committed people get the wrong things done. Focus is saying no to all but the few things that really matter. Being overcommitted is to pretend that everything matters and all the choices of what to do with your limited time are equal. Commit to doing more work, but only the work that  matters.Under-committed: This isn’t having too little to do, even though that is possible. It’s not being committed enough to your goals, your dreams, and your priorities. If you want to live a productive life, you must have a fire in your belly.Procrastination: Being productive means taking action on what matters most. You procrastinate when you know what you need to do but aren’t inspired enough to take action or aren’t disciplined enough to do the work that is necessary. When you are committed to meaningful goals, even the rote actions get done.Burnout: Being productive is only sustainable when you take time away from doing the work to refresh, reset, and recharge. The more you do, the more you need time to recover. Burnout comes when you don’t take care of the only real asset through which you produce results: You.Inability to Say No: Saying no to small things is how you preserve your time for big things. Without the ability to say no, other people’s priorities will crowd out your real priorities. Being productive requires that you say no far more than you say yes. Some are durable over long periods, and others are somewhat fragile, with the slightest neglect or stall, causing them to disintegrate before your very eyes. While healthy deals tend to come with activity and energy, deals can also be weak and sickly, lacking energy and acting and failing to thrive.Eventually, some deals die. They may die of old age, like the deal I noticed in one pipeline that had lived to the ripe old age of 1,732 days (almost five years old), a deal that was still in a forecast. Some deals are lost to fierce, hungry competitors who in some way outsell you, which is always painful, and a terrible way for a deal to die (which is why should do everything in your power to prevent deals from suffering this fate—and you along with them).Deals also die of neglect, failing to get the care and nurturing necessary for it to live, thrive, and survive. Still other dies to a no-decision, or a black swan, which may include: losing your champion, lacking an executive sponsor, the company being acquired, a change in priorities, loss of budget, a lack of consensus on pursuing the initiative, competing priorities, or dozens of other reasons deals dissolve and disappear. When a deal is dead, dig a hole and bury it. If the deal timed out, let it go. If it is old enough to start grade school, it isn’t really a deal. If you have gone through the process and ended up with a no-decision or not now, remove the deals from your CRM, move the prospect back to target, and take another run at them. You don’t have to give up on your dream client, but you may have to take a couple runs at winning their business.last_img read more

162 medical teams to tackle diseases after deluge in Maharashtra

first_imgFollowing the floods across the State due to heavy rainfall over the past week, the government fears a surge in cases of leptospirosis, dengue, malaria, and viral fevers. The health department has formed 162 medical teams to conduct house-to-house visits for early symptom diagnosis and treatment.Of these, 114 teams are working in the Thane region, 37 in Kolhapur and 10 in Pune.A health department official said a four-member team of two male and female medical worker each would visit bigger areas and villages, while the smaller villages would be covered by two-member teams.A press release issued on Tuesday by Health Minister Eknath Shinde said nearly 1.14 lakh people have been affected by the floods and heavy rainfall across the State. As many as 36 villages in the Kolhapur region, 18 in Thane and two to three villages in Satara and Nashik have been severely affected.“So far, the teams have covered more than 14,000 households. In the flood-affected areas, we have also undertaken work for cleaning water in the wells,” Mr. Shinde said.Fear of outbreakFor those who have waded through floodwater, leptospirosis is the biggest risk. It is a bacterial infection that is transmitted to humans through rat and cattle urine and excreta and commonly caused when one wades through contaminated water and the bacteria is transmitted through unhealed wounds in the skin, abrasions, and cuts especially on the foot. Mumbai has recorded 62 cases, and one death, due to leptospirosis in July this year.As the floodwaters recede, a surge in vector-borne disease is also most likely as mosquito breeding sees a rise. “Konkan, Navi Mumbai, and Thane region have recorded very high rainfall. The civic administration should be prompt in vector control measures. Those who have waded through water should get easy access to prophylactic medication as well,” Mr. Shinde said.last_img read more
