SA agro-processing ‘needs investment’

first_img6 November 2012 South Africa has a world-class agro-processing sector but its potential is not fully recognised and requires investment, says Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson. “South Africa has a world-class agro-processing and marketing infrastructure that provides for local needs as well as limited exports of a range of dairy products – largely to countries on our continent,” Joemat-Pettersson said at the World Dairy Summit in Cape Town on Monday. “We also supply a wide range of dairy equipment from global companies to other countries on the continent.” Despite this, the potential of the country’s sector remained unexploited, she said.‘Addressing unemployment and poverty’ South Africa’s dairy industry is the third-largest livestock sector in the country, with an estimated total turnover of R10-billion at producer level. The total number of milk producers in South Africa is at 2 347. “They produce more than 2.6-billion litres of milk and employ more than 30 000 workers. This important sector assists government in addressing some of our challenges, particularly unemployment and poverty,” she said. The dairy industry plays a critical role in ensuring global food security through the diverse range of its product offerings, including fresh milk, cheese, cream and yoghurt. It also ensures employment and income generation for millions of men and women across the globe. In this way, the sector ensures that basic needs of people are met, and their standard of living is increased.Sharing experiences and best practice The 2012 World Dairy Summit, organised by the South African National Committee of the International Dairy Federation, brings together producers, processors, technical experts and various other stakeholders to deliberate the challenges of the sector, and also to share experiences and best practices. South Africa supports a range of milk farming systems, from intensive total mixed ration to grass-fed and dairy ranching. A group of dairy farmers from Mozambique will soon be attending a course at the agricultural development centre outside George as part of a bilateral cooperation programme between South Africa and Mozambique. This effort has been highly successful, with the Consumer Education Project of Milk SA last year receiving the award for best campaign in the world from the International Dairy Federation and Dairy Standard Agency. Warner Bros Adds 5 More Movie Titles to Facebook Rentals, But Is It a Threat to Netflix?

first_imgaudrey watters A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Related Posts The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Earlier this month, Warner Bros announced that it would become the first Hollywood studio to make its movies available for sale or rental via Facebook. Its first offering: The Dark Knight. Now Warner Bros has added five more blockbuster titles to its Facebook rental catalog: Inception, Life as We Know It, Yogi Bear, and the first two Harry Potter movies. The new films will cost between 30 and 40 Facebook credits (between $3 and $4) for a 48-hour rental period. During that time period, you’ll have unlimited streaming access to the movie, meaning you can pause, rewind, watch on different computers, and watch numerous times. The movies are purchased and streamed within the Facebook page, meaning you won’t have to leave the site in order to watch. You’ll still be able to update your status and chat with friends. However, as the video player is Flash, you won’t be able to watch your Facebook movies on your Apple devices. The move by Warner Bros to make its films available to stream via Facebook is an effort to expand the company’s digital distribution efforts. The titles released today include a number of very recent movies. Yogi Bear was just released on DVD last week, and Life As We Know It came to DVD in early February. But the real competition here might not be the DVD rental business: it’s likely Netflix and its video streaming service. Certainly renting a movie for $3 to $4 a pop isn’t as good a deal as Netflix’s $8-per-month streaming subscription. Netflix has more titles, and that $8 gets you unlimited access to them. However, none of the six titles that Warner Bros has released via Facebook are available to stream on Netflix. (You can get the DVDs in the mail, of course, with the exception of Yogi Bear. New titles have a 28-day waiting period before coming to the movie rental site).Recent statistics point to Netflix as controlling a major share of the video streaming market – 61%. But despite its success with customers, the movie rental company has frequently butted heads with the movie studios. Warner Bros has not indicated what its plans are for releasing more movies via Facebook, but it may be looking to sidestep that control that Netflix currently has over the online streaming market.center_img Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Tags:#Facebook#NYT#Video Services#web Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verificationlast_img read more

Green Building Myth: Adding Solar is the Best Way to Green a Home

first_imgThe last several weeks I’ve written about common myths of green building: that it has to cost more to build green, that green building is mostly about materials, that green products don’t work as well as conventional products, and that it’s hard to find green products. This week I’ll cover the myth that adding solar panels is the best way to green a home.Without question, solar-electric (photovoltaic, PV) or solar water heating panels are the most visible green feature of many environmentally responsible homes. Either roof-mounted or installed on separate racks, those solar panels are in full view, they’re unusual enough to be noteworthy, and they convey–almost shout–a commitment to the environment. And rest assured, I’m a huge fan of both photovoltaics and solar water heating. (My first two real jobs–in New Mexico and then Vermont back in the late ’70s and early ’80s–were for organizations advancing solar energy, and solar is still dear to my heart.)But I strenuously resist the temptation of builders, remodelers, homeowners, and commercial building owners to green their buildings simply by slapping solar panels on the roof. Solar should be the icing on the cake–added after doing all the really important work of improving the energy performance of the building envelope and upgrading heating and cooling systems, appliances, and lighting with top-efficiency products. These measures aren’t as visible, but they usually yield far greater energy savings, financial return, and environmental benefit than a comparable investment in solar. Homeowners wanting to green their existing homes should start by getting a comprehensive energy audit to identify–and prioritize–energy saving measures. Likely measures will include adding insulation, upgrading windows (perhaps with new, low-e storms), air-tightening, replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact-fluorescent lamps (CFLs), replacing older heating or cooling systems, and switching to more efficient appliances. To reduce water heating costs, start by reducing your use of hot water by installing water-conserving showerheads, clothes washers, and dishwashers. After these investments, if your budget permits, by all means add a solar water heating or solar-electric system.Anyone thinking of building a new home should hire an architect or designer familiar with ultra-low-energy building practices, including passive solar design (a less noticeable but usually more cost-effective application of solar energy). If you do a really good job with all this and get your heating, cooling, and electrical loads low enough, you then might be able to satisfy all of those needs with solar–creating a “net-zero-energy” house. The temptation to start with solar is strong, especially with the very attractive 30% federal tax credits that exist for solar systems (see “Tax Credits for Solar Energy Systems”). Such generous solar tax credits, I fear, will result in a whole lot of money going into solar systems that yield considerably less energy savings than would have been realized by putting that money into energy conservation. When solar systems–especially PV systems–are installed on inefficient houses, the percent savings and return on investment can be very low; if you’re spending that much money (and the rest of us tax payers are helping out by subsidizing the tax credit) you might as well get some boasting rights!Yes, you should install solar water heating and solar-electric systems, but before you do that you should invest in the low-hanging fruit of energy conservation.I invite you to share your comments on this blog.To keep up with my latest articles and musings, you can sign up for my Twitter feedslast_img read more

Establishing Yourself as a Trusted Advisor

first_imgTo be a trusted advisor, you need trust, and you need advice. What Is Not AdviceYour product is not advice. Nor is your service. Nor are the solutions that you happen to sell. The features, benefits, and advantages of what you sell are not advice either.Your management team isn’t advice, and as impressive as your board members may be, they aren’t advice. You know what else isn’t advice? All of your locations, and all of the logos of the big, recognizable, widely-admired companies you serve. As remarkable as your clients are, they are not advice.Your differentiation strategy isn’t advice either. The things that make you different and make a difference for your clients may help you distinguish yourself in a crowded market, but they are not advice. If you are spending the precious little time you have with your dream clients talking about you, your product, your company, your clients, and what makes you different, you are not “advising.”What Is AdviceWhat are all the forces weighing down on your dream client and causing them to produce results that are less than they should be? How should they be thinking about these forces, and what should they do about them? What are the risks of not responding to the systemic challenges that threaten your dream client’s business? What are their choices? What are the trade-offs? What are the risks of taking action now? What opportunities are available to your dream client now? Which provide them with the greatest advantages and which hAve the fastest return on invested time, money, and resources? How you engage with your dream client matters.Where you start the conversation is important because you are defining your relationship. If you begin the conversation with the things that you are comfortable talking about but that don’t create value, then you are not establishing that you have the potential to be their consigliere. If on the other hand, you start the conversation with strategically important issues, you demonstrate that you know something worth knowing, something that can benefit your dream client.Business acumen is the new sales acumen. s What is at risk by starting the conversation too low is nothing less than your relevance.last_img read more
