However, in addition to views of the city, in the Train Museum visitors can see some symbols of the city of Zagreb, such as a model of the Sljeme trail that stretches over three square meters with snow, skiers, support services working on the trail, but also what Sljeme already long missing – by cable car. The model also depicts the spirit of Advent in Zagreb, so there is a permanent exhibition of the Museum and a mini skating rink with about 20 skaters who are always on the move. The Vlakić Backo Museum is located in the center of Zagreb, more precisely in Gundulićeva Street no. 4, and with its opening it has certainly enriched the tourist offer of our capital. More than impressive, especially for children, ie as a great content for families. Five years of painstaking and diligent modeling work resulted in the Backo Mini Express – the largest model railway in Southeast Europe (the fifth largest in Europe), becoming the Zagreb Train Museum. “Every year, our Museum is visited by more than 20 visitors, and we are especially looking forward to the children who grow up with us just as our exhibition content grows. Visitors love trains, they stay with us on average from an hour to an hour and a half, in order to learn a lot of useful things about modeling, traffic, but also other facilities offered by our unique museum. We also have our educated modeling team that provides expert guidance on tours and visits to museums, introducing all visitors to technical, software, modeling and railway – traffic information, according to which our project is special in this part of the world.explained Antun Urbić Backo, owner and founder of the Zagreb Train Museum. “The Southern Ocean is regarded as key in understanding the processes of climate change,” the department’s oceans and coasts deputy director-general, Monde Mayekiso, said at the start of the voyage in Cape Town. The new vessel will have enhanced technologies and capabilities to further understand the ocean environment and to bring that understanding to an increasing number of South Africans. The ship is sailing from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and then on to Durban, before heading back to Cape Town. The voyage will highlight the various scientific activities undertaken by the Department of Environmental Affairs in Antarctica and the Southern Oceans, the opportunities and threats posed by the ocean to coastal communities, and the real and considerable impact of oceans on the climate. The three Sanap research bases include the ones on Marion Island, Gough Island, and the SA National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE) IV base station at Vesleskarvet nunatak, which is a rocky outcrop peeping out of a snowy surface. SA National Antarctic Programme The 17th Conferences of the Parties (COP 17) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change takes place in Durban from 28 November to 9 December. South Africa’s ice-strengthened polar research and supply vessel, the SA Agulhas, is on a symbolic 10-day voyage to raise climate awareness ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 17) starting in Durban later this month. Modern, fuel efficient replacement “South Africa has an advantage in that the Southern Ocean is on its doorstep, so to speak, and now we’ll have the ideal tool and platform to do cutting-edge research.” SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material 14 November 2011 This voyage will also highlight the last voyage of the SA Agulhas to Antarctica in December 2010 before it is replaced by a new vessel, the SA Agulhas II, being built in Finland at a cost of about R1.5-billion. The SA Agulhas has 138 people onboard, comprising 40 crew and 98 scientific and other staff. She is used to service the three South African National Antarctic Programme (Sanap) research bases in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica as well as various research voyages. She spends most of her time out of harbour. With a mix of scientists, academics, students and journalists on board, the vessel set sail from Cape Town on Saturday to raise awareness around climate change in the country’s coastal cities. The SA Agulhas also provided the capacity for South Africa to commit to and honour international agreements, including deploying drifting weather buoys that significantly increased the country’s weather predicting capability, and servicing automatic weather stations on remote islands like Southern Thule and Zawadovski. “By the time COP 17 draws to a close, the SA Agulhas will be on her last voyage to the Antarctic,” Mayekiso said. “South Africa has been involved in Antarctica, the Southern Ocean and on the sub-Antarctic islands, Marion and Gough, for more than 50 years, doing research. “For 33 of those 50-plus years, the SA Agulhas has been the means to get to the remote stations and providing the platform to do oceanographic research and meteorology observations from. “She served us very well – transporting supplies and fuel and carrying the relief overwintering teams to the islands and Antarctica.” In the build-up to the conference, the voyage will have on-board exhibitions, symposiums and lectures from climate change scientists showcasing the work the vessel has done in the area of climate research for the last three decades.
29 October 2012Fruit South Africa has finalised an ethical standard and audit process for the industry that will ensure that South African fruit is produced in line with internationally accepted labour and environmental standards. In a statement earlier this month, Fruit South Africa said the standard was aligned to South African law, was internationally recognised, and had the benefit promoting a single standard and audit to replace the numerous standards and audits with which producers must comply. The umbrella body for SA’s fruit producers’ assocations said the new standard was “a world first with regards to enabling mutual recognition of audits among international and local retailers”.Global Social Compliance ProgrammeIn order to achieve this, Fruit SA engaged with the Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP), an organisation which aims to harmonise ethical requirements and avoid duplication of audits while ensuring that global standards are adhered to.Fruit SA used the GSCP reference code as the basis for the development of its own standard, and aligned this to South African law. The standard was then submitted to the GSCP “to undergo a process of equivalence validated by an independent international panel of experts”.According to Fruit SA, the GSCP is supported by various global retailers, including Tesco, M&S, Walmart, Ahold, Migros, COOP Switzerland, Delhaise, Carrefour, and South African retailer Pick n Pay.South Africa exports a large proportion of its fruit. According to Business Day, SA’s industry employs nearly half-million people, and sold its fruit to 70 countries in 2011, earning the country in the region of R12-billion.Sustainability Initiative of South AfricaThe Sustainability Initiative of South Africa (Siza) – incorporating Fruit SA’s ethical trade programme – will be the custodian of the new standard.Fruit SA said that Siza was a “multi-stakeholder platform”, with membership open to producers, exporters and stakeholders across the supply chain, that could in time be expanded beyond the fruit sector to represent the broader agricultural industry.“While the programme has been driven by the fruit industry, it is open to all agricultural industries in South Africa, and will look to work with the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) in the future in providing the framework for a harmonised environmental standard with the same international recognition afforded by the GSCP.”Fruit SA stressed that Siza was “development-led rather than audit-led”, aiming to provide growers with the tools to be self-regulated.“As a locally developed, managed and funded programme that is aligned to international requirements, the Siza programme is recognised as a world first of its kind.”SAinfo reporter
6 November 2012 South Africa has a world-class agro-processing sector but its potential is not fully recognised and requires investment, says Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson. “South Africa has a world-class agro-processing and marketing infrastructure that provides for local needs as well as limited exports of a range of dairy products – largely to countries on our continent,” Joemat-Pettersson said at the World Dairy Summit in Cape Town on Monday. “We also supply a wide range of dairy equipment from global companies to other countries on the continent.” Despite this, the potential of the country’s sector remained unexploited, she said.‘Addressing unemployment and poverty’ South Africa’s dairy industry is the third-largest livestock sector in the country, with an estimated total turnover of R10-billion at producer level. The total number of milk producers in South Africa is at 2 347. “They produce more than 2.6-billion litres of milk and employ more than 30 000 workers. This important sector assists government in addressing some of our challenges, particularly unemployment and poverty,” she said. The dairy industry plays a critical role in ensuring global food security through the diverse range of its product offerings, including fresh milk, cheese, cream and yoghurt. It also ensures employment and income generation for millions of men and women across the globe. In this way, the sector ensures that basic needs of people are met, and their standard of living is increased.Sharing experiences and best practice The 2012 World Dairy Summit, organised by the South African National Committee of the International Dairy Federation, brings together producers, processors, technical experts and various other stakeholders to deliberate the challenges of the sector, and also to share experiences and best practices. South Africa supports a range of milk farming systems, from intensive total mixed ration to grass-fed and dairy ranching. A group of dairy farmers from Mozambique will soon be attending a course at the agricultural development centre outside George as part of a bilateral cooperation programme between South Africa and Mozambique. This effort has been highly successful, with the Consumer Education Project of Milk SA last year receiving the award for best campaign in the world from the International Dairy Federation and Dairy Standard Agency. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#Google#Video Services#web mSpot, a streaming music and movie service, has just announced its partnership with Google TV to deliver more content to the Internet TV platform. The service offers full-length movie rentals, but it also works between devices so you can pick up where you left off when watching a film on your PC, tablet or mobile phone. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… sarah perez You may be familiar with the name mSpot because of its mobile offerings for iPhone and Android, which are separated into two apps: mSpot Music and mSpot Movies. With mSpot Music, you first have to download its installer on your computer and upload your files to the “cloud,” in this case the cloud referring to mSpot’s own servers. Once that process is complete, you can stream your own music from your mobile phone, anywhere you have an Internet connection. However, with mSpot Movies, an entity so different that it even lives at its own domain name where it makes no mention of its sister service, you simply download an app to watch free movie trailers and rental movies that start at $2.99. There is no computer-based installer as you’re not accessing your own digital media collection, but actual movies from Hollywood studios who have partnered with the company. Now on Google TVmSpot has not created a special “app” for Google TV for its Music offering – it says you’ll have to load up the Chrome Web browser and head over to its mobile site at m.mspot.com instead. Here, your music library is available for streaming from your TV. You get the first 2 GB for free (1600 songs) then its $3.99 for 40 more gigs.It sounds like mSpot’s Movies’ integration has been given more consideration, though. You launch the service from its own icon in the “Spotlight” section on Google TV (or via mspotmovies.com). And the interface, says the company, has been optimized for the big screen, even if you’re browsing for movies from 10 feet away (as you probably are). Again, movies are $2.99-$3.99 to rent.Another interesting side note – mSpot says it will begin offering DRM-enabled caching of movies on your devices starting this year. That way, you could stream content even when offline. Despite the near-ubitity of cell coverage, dead spots and low-bandwidth areas are still an issue for many. And streaming movies to your mobile is something many travelers do – often on planes without Wi-Fi, as well as trains, subways, buses, etc. When that offline feature launches, mSpot may begin to get even more pickup than they have now. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 10, 2018Three days later, members of Congress brought him a bill that he quickly turned down. He responded to the proposal with these two tweets: Congress is facing a Friday Jan. 19 deadline to pass a spending bill, which helps determine the government’s budget and discretionary spending for the fiscal year. Last week, President Trump held a bipartisan meeting with members of Congress regarding the looming government shutdown. President Trump made it clear that funding for the wall must be part of any immigration deal Congress brings to his desk. He tweeted the following after the meeting: Mike McKinnon III, Updated: 4:38 PM Posted: January 18, 2018 Most #Dreamers are living in the only country they have ever known. On the other hand, Republicans say the Democrats are putting people who are here illegally at a bigger priority than our national security. WILMINGTON, MA — At last month’s 19th Middlesex State Representative debate, candidates were asked what can and should be done to hold judges more accountable for their decisions.“I think anyone an appointed position should be held accountable by someone, somewhere,” said Patricia Meuse (I-Tewksbury). “Is it the governor’s judicial council? I’m not sure. They’re the ones who appoint them. I think maybe they’re should be a citizen’s council who, every five years, look over every judge’s decisions.”“What happened during the summer with [Judge Feeley] was outrageous,” added Meuse. “As an attorney, if I had ever had a drug dealer go to that judge and have been sentenced, I would have had them file an appeal. If you’re going to do it for him, do it for all of us. He’s a drug dealer who is helping his family? [By the judge’s logic], then all drug dealers are trying to help their families.”“All judges should definitely be accountable and, every five years, their records should be looked at,” said Pina Prinzivalli (R-Tewksbury). “Judge Feeley was the one that released a drug dealer because he said he was supporting his family, which is just ridiculous. I’m the only candidate that joined the fight with State Rep. Jim Lyons to impeach Judge Feely. The reason there was no vote to impeach him was because the Democratic Party on Beacon Hill would rather not vote on it and protect themselves, than stand up for what is right and what is wrong. As your next State Representative, I will always be a bold voice and fight for what is right on Beacon Hill.”“Pina, you weren’t the only candidate,” said Dave Robertson (D-Tewksbury). “In fact, I signed Rep. Lyons’ petition the very first day and then wrote an extensive op/ed that was looking to creative another council and more bureaucracy, but rather put judges on a rotating schedule and put their accountability in the hands of the voters.”“When you look at appointed judges vs. elected judges, it’s pretty transparent – and this comes from both liberal and conservative law schools – that when judges start getting elected, and you’re friends with that elected judge, and your son or daughter gets pulled over, that ticket kind of goes away,” added Robertson. “What was proposed was a hybrid system. A governor would appoint such judges and, after five years, the public could vote them out. Voters couldn’t replace them, the governor would still have the ability to appoint with the advice of his or her council. It appoints accountability in the hands of us, the voters. Judge Feeley wasn’t the first judge to screw up in the Commonwealth, let’s face it. It’s been happening since 1776.”Watch the debate, courtesy of Wilmington Community Television, below. What’s new: The budgeting tool — which generates a suggested monthly spend based on your financial data — renders spending visually using colored bar graphs. Things like interest rates are adjusted by a number of colored sliders and can be viewed over a number of periods, including a 12-month outlook. The debt reduction tool, which helps users design a repayment plan for credit cards and other debt, has been simplified. Users now can input their credit card information, download interest rates and minimum payment information and then Quicken formulates a payment plan. The tool allows you to see how you can prioritize debts, such as paying off smaller debts first. Quicken 2012 starts at a one-time fee of $30 for the starter edition, which is aimed at consumers, $60 for the deluxe edition, which includes debt reduction tools, and $90 for the premier edition which includes more investment management options. What you might like: The look and feel has been improved over previous versions, including the overall experience of the budget and debt tools. For example, the colored debt reduction line graph makes it easy to see how much interest you will pay over time. Quicken also says the new software is faster and can handle larger data files than last year’s version, which is probably true. What you might not like: We encountered the same problem we always do with Quicken software: You have to double check your entries. As powerful an automated tool as Quicken is, it makes assumptions on how it categorizes spending and expenses it imports from credit cards and checking accounts, grouping expenses into categories such as food and dining, automotive or entertainment. These labels are correct a lot of the time but, to be IRS-ready, you’ll need to sit down each month and confirm that Quicken is modeling your finances properly.Bottom line: While these improvements are nice, they aren’t dramatic. If last year’s model — or really any model of Quicken — is doing the job for you, then you may consider sticking with it. This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now October 20, 2011 Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. If you’ve been searching for an easier way to keep track of your budget and managing expenses, then you might consider buying or upgrading to the recently-released 2012 version of Quicken. While it isn’t a major overhaul compared to last year’s unveiling of its amped-up Web-friendly capabilities, the latest version of this popular finance management software includes a significant face-lift to the tools that help users plan spending and reduce debt.Quicken 2012 pulls in financial data from the Web, primarily from online bank accounts and credit cards, and then analyzes it to render a “real-time” picture of a user’s finances. Then it helps make budgeting decisions, pay bills and save money. These aren’t new features, but Quicken has updated the look and feel of some of its budgeting tools to make them more intuitive.Considering Quicken is a favorite of small business owners trying to stay on top of their finances, we arranged for a prelaunch demo. Here’s a look at what makes it a worthwhile investment for your business, and also why it may not be. min read Enroll Now for Free
