ATT announces Motorola Atrix 2 bigger display faster downloads 8MP camera

first_imgAt CTIA today, AT&T announced that the sequel to the Motorola Atrix, dubbed the Atrix 2, will be coming soon. Perhaps Atrix 1.5 would have been a better name, because this is a relatively minor update to its dual-core predecessor. The highlights here are the larger display, the faster network capabilities, and an improved camera. It has a PenTile qHD (960×540) display, just like its older sibling, but it balloons up from four inches to 4.3″. It now supports theoretical 21Mbps downloads on AT&T’s HSPA+ network (the original only managed 14.4Mbps). The shooter gets upgraded to 8MP (up from 5MP), and it now shoots 1080p video – updated from the 720p vid that the original Atrix shot.Otherwise, it carries over the same 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, and the same basic physical design. For faux laptop fans, the Atrix 2 also carries over the “Webdock” connectivity for use with the optional (and pricey) Lapdock accessory. It launches on October 16 for $99.99 (plus the obligatory new two-year contract). This is a quick sequel for the Atrix, as the original just launched earlier this year. While it was met with mostly positive reviews, and was noted for its Tegra-2 chip, the world of high-end Android smartphones is a rapidly-changing one. I don’t imagine the original has been selling like hotcakes lately, so an update now makes sense.I’m not sure if fans have exactly been clamoring for an updated Atrix, though, with new dual-core phones like the Droid Bionic, EVO 3D, and HTC Sensation now available. While the Atrix 2 doesn’t really offer anything that these other beasts don’t already bring to the table, it does take what the original brought to the table, improves on that formula, and brings it more up to “late 2011” specs.via PC Magazinelast_img
