LOS ANGELES – Actor/director/producer Rob Reiner resigned Wednesday as head of the First 5 California Children and Families Commission, and a Los Angeles-based social service agency executive, who resides in La Mirada, was named to take his place. Reiner had recently rebuffed calls for his resignation, shrugging off allegations that he had used his position to improperly push for passage of a universal-preschool measure on the June ballot. “For seven years I have volunteered as the chairperson of First 5 California, and I am proud of all that we have accomplished,” Reiner wrote in a resignation letter to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. “We have touched the lives of over 3.4 million children across the state from providing health insurance to preschool to parent education information to prenatal services.” Reiner – who rose to fame playing Mike “Meathead” Stivic on “All in the Family” and went on to direct films such as “This is Spinal Tap,” “When Harry Met Sally…” and “A Few Good Men”- chaired the commission from its inception in 1999. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Reiner has denied any wrongdoing. The First 5 Commission is charged with promoting and improving early childhood development programs throughout the state. To replace Reiner, Schwarzenegger appointed Hector Ramirez, vice president and chief operating officer of Para Los Ni os. “Hector has a long-standing passion for helping children and a demonstrated commitment to giving disadvantaged parents and families the support they so desperately need,” Schwarzenegger said.
