The ongoing promotion with Staters Bros., the presenting sponsor of the Feb. 24 Busch race, is unique, according to Zucker. It’s the only promotion in the country where fans can get a free $55 Cup race ticket for buying $55 of groceries through Feb.9. “It’s been an amazing deal,” said Zucker, “we’ve had a steady line of fans redeeming their receipts the past three days. We have moved more than 1,000 tickets and it’s getting bigger each day.” Receipts must be dated through Feb. 9 and must be redeemed by Feb.14. Zucker said fans have traveled to the Fontana track from as far as Barstow and Orange County. “It’s actually part of the `Race to 55 Sweepstakes”‘ said Zucker. “In addition to the free ticket, we’re drawing for 55 prizes.” Tops among the prizes will be a ride on the Goodyear blimp and the opportunity to wave the green flag during Cup qualifying Feb. 23. “I’ve been most impressed by the number of families in line,” Zucker said. “Mom and dad might have been here before, now they’re bringing the kids.” On Monday, fans will get an opportunity to meet Carl Edwards. He’ll be at the speedway ticket booth from noon to 1 p.m. and will hand out a pound of See’s Candy to the first 200 who purchase a ticket. With the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Auto Club 500 just around the corner, California Speedway president Gillian Zucker has started the full-court press to sell tickets. In the process, she has enlisted the help of partner Stater Bros. and Cup driver Carl Edwards. The Feb. 25 race is second on the Nextel Cup schedule. Edwards will have quite a two-day experience in California. He’ll attend the Grammys on Sunday, help the speedway promote the race on various media outlets, help debut the track’s new $1 million-plus sign adjacent to Interstate 10 and pass out candy. LOCAL TRACKS Perris Auto Speedway will host the Late Model opener Saturday night. Also on the card will be the new PASSCAR Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks and Cruisers.
