Sir Cliff Richard Im wary of being around children

Sir Cliff Richard says he avoids the ball boys at Wimbledon and will not be photographed with his arms around children despite being cleared of child sex assault allegations. The singer said he has been left feeling vulnerable after the ordeal, in which the BBC filmed a police raid on his home. He won a privacy case against the corporation and an apology from South Yorkshire Police. He has been a fixture at Wimbledon for decades, famously entertaining the crowds in 1996 by singing during a long rain delay on Centre Court. But he told an ITV documentary: “I’m careful if people ask me to have pictures taken with their children. From Centre Court I walked through a tunnel and came up by seats on Court One, but since what happened to me happened I haven’t gone down there because that tunnel is right by the ball boys’ dressing room.”I cannot bring myself to be anywhere like that on my own.”His friend, Gloria Hunniford, also appears with him in the programme and said: “The saddest thing I heard Cliff say during all of this is, I will never ever put my arms around young people again when I’m having photographs taken.'” The documentary, Sir Cliff Richard – 60 Years in Public and in Private, will be broadcast on December 10. It also features interviews from supporters Olivia Newton-John, Jimmy Osmond and Hank Marvin. It was filmed over a six-month period at Sir Cliff’s home in Portugal and Abbey Road Studios, as he prepared to launch a new album. He has rebuilt his life and his reputation since the police raid but disclosed: “I spoke to my lawyers and I said, ‘What do I do about what people say about me on the internet?’ They said, ‘Get used to it – you’re a celebrity.'” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp?
