Nova Scotia Welcomes New Lieutenant Governor

first_imgPremier Darrell Dexter welcomes the appointment of Brig.-Gen. John James Grant as the new Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. The appointment was announced today, Feb. 16, by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “General Grant is an accomplished businessman, community volunteer and a proud member of Canada’s military,” said Premier Dexter. “He has represented Nova Scotia proudly throughout his career and his life in Pictou County. His service to Canada will continue in his new role, and we are fortunate to have such a dedicated Nova Scotian as the province’s next lieutenant governor.” Mr. Grant will replace Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis, who has held the position since 2006. She was the first African Nova Scotian to become the Queen’s representative in the province. “Nova Scotia has been well represented by Lt.-Gov. Francis and the province thanks her for her years of service and her commitment to help make life better for families,” said Premier Dexter. The primary responsibility of the lieutenant governor is to act as the Crown’s representative and chief executive officer of the province of Nova Scotia. Every measure and bill passed in the Nova Scotia Legislature must be given royal assent before it can become law.last_img read more
